House Candidate Weirauch Encourages Union Voters to Make a Difference

by Seth Michaels, Dec 3, 2007

Next week, voters in northwest Ohio will have the chance to send a new representative to the U.S. House. Robin Weirauch, the Democratic candidate in the special election in Ohio’s 5th Congressional District, has released a video clip asking for the support of working families and stressing the importance of a strong, active union movement in ensuring a fair economy.

In the video, Weirauch says she’ll fight for the needs of workers:

We have a real chance here to shake things up in Washington, and I sure hope we do, because business as usual will not lead us to a better future. We have a lot of work to do to make this happen December 11, and your help is going to make all the difference.

The 5th District seat is open because of the death Sept. 5 of Paul Gillmor, a Republican who held the seat since 1989. President Bush won 61 percent of the district’s vote in 2004, while two Democrats, Gov. Ted Strickland and Sen. Sherrod Brown, won there in 2006. Weirauch received 43 percent of the vote in her 2006 challenge to Gillmor. Running against Weirauch is Republican Bob Latta.

Weirauch, a former member of the Electrical Workers (IBEW), offers her support in her video for the Employee Free Choice Act, for trade policies that protect workers and the environment, and for affordable, high-quality health care for all.

You can find more coverage of this race at As Ohio Goes, Buckeye State Blog and Ohio Daily Blog.

This race offers a rare opportunity to promote the interests of working families in Ohio. The special election is Tuesday, Dec. 11.

2. All of the Dem committees are sending help or money.

I know the DNC is moving staff from around the country to go there and work.

They are forcing the GOP to spend a lot of money to keep that seat, money they are running short of now.

I think it is great.

3. Excellent!
She is a friend of mine whom I met through campaigning in 06. The Ohio Nurse Democratic Caucus is working OT for her too!

This campaign is channeling all the energy from the 06 Ohio Democratic Candidates both the winners and losers......to make this a Victory! You know, Robin worked a full time job while running her campaign the last time......Her and her husband were exhausted; hesitant/ambivalent to consider another run in 08....but this is much, much different now. We feel the love!

4. The Word Is Indeed Spreading--FAST
The netroots community is becoming fast enough on its feet to join its brothers and sisters at the DNC and AFL-CIO in providing support when time is of the essense. Steve's post just got Robin $500 (and Act Blue $50) at a time when Robin clearly needs it sooner rather than later. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GUYS--YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!!!
