I grew up in a high school where people would scratch images of black people hanging from trees into the scoring table in our gym. Fuck you for saying that there aren't people who think like the comedian described.

Come to Alabama. I hate that flag, they even issue it on car tags here. Everyone who has one publicly claims it is about heritage, but who in all of history ever celebrated losing a war. The sad thing is the war had little to do with slavery and everything to do with money. People with big money spinning up regular people to go fight for them, so they could win an argument with each other and make more money. I wonder if they will spin this war in the history books as badly as the rednecks try to spin this one.

the 'civil' war was about what nearly, if not all, wars are about; pirate bankers working all sides against a PROFIT!!! Slavery was going to end in America one way or another, . how that war got turned into a single issue war about slavery is a great example if how ignorant American people are about history, and the power of SPIN CONTROL,. was that war not more about the central banks and who had the power to issue money? The pirate bankers control the very writing of history and the ignorant people just buy right into it,.

the sad fact is that most of those ignorant people that defend and fly the flag in question likely do it in some dim-witted support of concept of slavery of africans,. hope they are prepared for their white corporate slavery as this is where that ignorance leads.

and hearing this discussion on TV. Someone opened a wormhole back to the 50's.

It's as simple as that. For the people who ask "What's the big deal man? It's part of our history." Make that comparison. It's a reminder to them, that an organization, a government, had targeted them specifically for all their hatred, and declared them to be inferior, less than human.

The difference here, is that in modern Germany, you won't find a Nazi flag flying anywhere.. Because that era is a source of national shame to them.. a blotch on their proud history when they look back and say, oh God I can't believe we were that stupid.

Apparently that kind of collective, embarrassed, regret doesn't translate to English very well, because clearly, not everybody gets it.

What we call the "Stars & Bars" these days is not even the Stars & Bars. If all these folks who want to fly the confederate flag for reasons of history and heritage would actually learn some history, there wouldn't be a problem.

The REAL "stars and bars" is the flag of the Confederate States of America. It consists of a blue field in the upper left corner with 13 stars arranged in a circle with one in the middle. The rest of the flag is 3 wide horizontal bars...red, white, red.

The REAL battle flag consisted of what we think of as a "confederate flag" in the upper left quad, on a white field. This got mistaken for a surrender flag too often so they added a big red vertical bar on the right side.

No one is flying (or talking about) either of these flags.

The current so called "confederate flag" is a symbol of white supremacy and bigotry....just like the man said. It is only marginally connected with the real history.

I know, I know, I've gone on way too long about it all. But the next time someone plays the "It's my heritage! It's our history" card, it's good to know the real history while you call "Bull shit!"

.... it IS true that Lincoln wanted the blacks sent back to Africa. Alas, it was common "wisdom" in the 19th century that "blacks" could not be integrated into society. That's what they thought.

You cannot judge 19th people by 21st century standards. It's not fair. We know things they didn't. And they live in the thick of a society we would find hard to fathom.

yes, Lincoln said 'if the union can be preserved w/out slavery, then no slavery, or if it preserved with slavery, then ok slavery, or if the union preserved with slave part and part w/out slave, then let's do that' etc (paraphrasing)...iow Lincoln wasn't an activist who was pushing private agenda, he was ambitious, tough smart and was best man for job of US prez- and he said preserving the union was THE JOB! Slavery only factored in when pro slavery forces confronted Abe, and Abe kicked em to the curb (and became hero just doing his job)
He was murdered for doing his job- everything else is revisionism, freeper logic, iow nonsense
(btw the idea that ancient peoples were crude or stupid or less considerate or conscious of injustice, which slavery obviously is, is a testament to the reality that only one class, the upper, has really had a say in the history we read- vast amounts of history was written and lost, and it reflected wisdom that can be startling to think of. For instance, ancient people discovered that overcharging interest on loans, ie sharking, was wrong- way back in ancient Egypt times!)
