12. Possibly only "seems"
Hogan is one of those guys who's almost a split personality. I was in the wrestling business and still speak to a lot of guys still in there and what they tell me is that there's two sides to Hogan.

On the one hand, Terry (the man away from the business) is one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet: Gentle, charming, approachable, always makes time for the fans, does loads for charity (especially kids charities like Make-A-Wish), generous, doesn't shove his faith (he's devoutly Christian) in anyone's face but genuinely tries to live to the ideals. Decent bass player too.

On the other hand, Hulk (the man involved with the wrestling business) is opportunistic, ruthlessly self-interested, lazy, nepotistic and had a big part in the collapse of WCW due to his unwillingness to step aside. Although, in fairness, he's never been as vindictive as many people in wrestling.

Oh yeah, he once ran for president as a publicity stunt too.

18. Interesting
Sounds like a lot of figures in showbiz. (Sorry, but pro wrestling is not a sport to me!)

One thing we can probably be sure of is that he is a better person than Jesse "The Body" Ventura.

21. I'd argue it's a sport
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 07:12 PM by Prophet 451
Granted, pro wrestling is a work (rigged) outside a few specialist promotions like K-1 but it is highly competative and if gymnastics is a sport, so is wrestling. Lance Storm once made an arguement that I very much agree with that wrestling shouldn't be judged like boxing but should be judged like gymnastics or ice dancing because the object is to cooperate with your partner to put on the most entertaining performance possible. Since both gymnastics and ice dancing are Olympic sports, so is wrestling. You just have to look at it in the right way. We're stunt performers, we make no bones about that (outside of the show itself when you have to maintain kayfabe for the fans to enjoy it) but there is an art to turning in an entertaining match.

I actually don't know much about Jesse's political achievments. I know he was very popular when he won and then became very unpopular as time went on but that's about all I know.

4. Not Something I would Be Bragging About!
Didn't he just allow his son over consume alcohol get into a vehicle and drive drunk and get into a nearly fatal accident? Any news on the law suit?

7. Pending
In fairness, the details of the accident are still unclear. Hulk may or may not have allowed his son to drink and drive (although he wasn't actually drunk, he had been drinking). There's all sorts of wrangling going on as regards the lawsuit (and Hogan is currently going through a messy divorce too) although rumour I'm hearing is that it will be settled.

8. May be "huger" than you think
WWF fans are likely the demographic where Obama's support is weakest.

10. That's actually a very interesting point
I can't believe I didn't think of that, but you make a great point.

And yes, despite what they may claim, many people ARE swayed by such things.

13. Dunno about that
The WWE's target audience is 15-30 year old males. Of those, Hogan's fans tend to be in the higher end of that range or sometimes above it (due to his WCW run which had an older target audience). Hogan hasn't worked a full-time schedule in years and for the last two or three years, he's only done one or two "special attraction" matches a season. I could be wrong but I was given to understand that Obama's support amongst the young male demographic was already quite strong.

17. Yeah But
don't forget he had (has?) that reality TV show on MTV (I think it's MTV) where they follow his family around. That means he has a new fan base in addition to the old one.

More importantly, he's also hosting NBC's American Gladiators which I'm pretty sure is doing quite well in the ratings and is watched by millions of people, a good chunk of which aren't necessarily just young men.

20. Point
I'd forgotten about the Gladiators deal. The "reality" show has been pulled given his divorce and Nick Hogan's driving arrest.

11. Like the endorsement of an actor/wrestler means much!
Yeah, and professional wrestling isn't staged!
This is part of what is wrong with this country.
Some of us are more interested in celebrities, than issues!
Who cares what stars are backing what candidates, what matters are issues.

16. I can actually picture Hogan saying that
Throw in a few "dude"s, a couple of "man"s, finish up with "whatcha gonna do" and you have most of Hogan's promos from the nineties.

22. Hogan breaks from the pack... I'm disappointed
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 07:51 PM by rpannier
I mean...
I was hoping he'd endorse huckabee.

The Hulkster endorses the Huckster. Huckster/Hulkster 08.

On a serious note...
I am glad to see some of these guys do endorse someone other than the reactionary republikkans.

I saw a Discovery-Asia episode on politics and sports and they talked about wrestlers and politics. The only 3 Democrats (liberals) in the group they talked to were Bret Hart (who's Canadian), Mick Foley (we all knew that anyway) and Kevin Nash (whose allegiance to Democrats has more to do with insurance than anything else).
The rest of the wrestlers were conservative, christian types: Flair, Michaels, etc

on edit: I left out DUH-byas BFF - JBL

24. Young voters like wrestling and it was a factor in the Minnesota election of Jesse Ventura.
Could be a sleeper of an endorsement, so to speak? ;)
