CONYERS: Sixty Minutes Piece on Justice Department Selective Prosecution
Submitted by JC on February 24, 2008 - 10:55pm. - http://johnconyers.com/node/201

CBS VIDEO embedded.

CBS's Sixty Minutes tonight covered the story of the prosecution of former Alabama governor Don Siegelman. The news magazine show features comments by Republican insiders about what they allege to be politically motivated prosecutions against Democratic officials.

One Republican state attorney general summed up the Siegelman prosecution this way:

"They targeted Don Siegelman because they could not beat him fair and square. This was a Republican state and he was the one Democrat they could never get rid of."

The prosecution was led by a U.S. Attorney in Alabama married to the campaign manager of Siegelman's Republican gubernatorial opponent.

23. Unjust imprisonment...
I've suspected from the onset something was wrong with both Don Siegelman and Richard Scrushy's federal imprisonment. My question to all, what can we do to free these men? I am not an expert on the case, but from what I have learned, these men are being held unjustly.

4. THEY DID
WHNT, the CBS station in North Alabama, had a mysterious “service interruption” just during the Siegelman segment of 60 minuets. The Station blaimed it on a problem from CBS in NYC but there was not problem. The station purposely blocked this part from being shown and the station is owned by a heavily republican family.

7. Every channel works on my cable TV but CSPAN 2
Guess they don't want me to hear the Senators. This just happened...just before the election. I have a picture but no sound. The Comcast cable company wanted to send out a repairman at my expense. I said, no. I can find out what the Senators aren't doing on the Internet.

42. And just before the election how about that?
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 10:45 AM by mac2
CSPAN was created as a government cable station in an agreement that if cable was to charge money and still have advertisers, we would get something out of it. Now they are trying to silence it.

It makes me really angry to see the Brits on our CSPAN. They can't vote here or we there. At least not until the Empire is back. Yet when public action groups want to speak CSPAN says they don't have empty time for them.

All of this happens only because there are so many traitors to our democracy. They think it will survive all the corruption and manipulation? Where are their ethics?

When I complained about their agreement to us cable users, they said they could do anything they wanted since they are "privately run". I hate to say it but they have an agreement and can't just do what they want. It is our airways and money. The FCC and Congress ignores all of it.

9. wow! thank you for the link!
"Republicans Lead the Attack
But the show was dominated by one of 52 former attorneys general from 40 of the 50 states who have called for a Congressional probe of the conduct of the Siegelman case, former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods. He leveled a series of blistering accusations at the Bush Administration’s Justice Department. With the Alabama G.O.P. this evening issuing a near-hysterical statement in which it characterizes the CBS broadcast—before its transmission—as an anti-Republican attack piece it was notable that Woods, like the piece’s other star witness, is a Republican. Not just any Republican, either. Grant Woods is co-chair of the McCain for President leadership committee, and a lifelong friend and advisor to the presumptive 2008 G.O.P. presidential candidate. Woods is also godfather to one of the McCain children."

12. Every Democrat must feel hugely threatened ---
if they can do this to Siegelman, they can do it to any Democrat --
and it should give us a little better perspective on what's been going on --
No comment by Dems on this??
Amazing!!!

14. We could only wish!!! Are you kidding . . . ?
Do you know how far ahead of us secret government and planning is ---

When did you learn anything about PNAC . . . and how long had their filthy plans been
in existence?

And how much do you even know about them now --- ?
And they're out in the open!!!

The Nixons and the Roves are the hired hands ---
There are many behind the scenes ---

Some names are known, naturally -- Prescott Bush, Allen Dulles ---

Simply think about the Federal AGs . . . 8 fired . . . think about the other 92 who did the kind
of things that the Repugs wanted them to do without protest --- !!! !!!

And, in the Siegelman story tonight --- STATE AGs . . .

This is wide and deep corruption ---
Watergate never stopped ---
Operation Northwoods never stopped ---
Mockingbird never stopped -- etal

34. Right . . . and who helped cover up Iran-Contra . . . ?
The public has never really been told the truth of Iran-Contra . . .

With whistleblowers still coming forward from all parts of government ---
even out of the GOP to tell us that 9/11 was an "inside job" ---
I would suggest the corruption isn't quite yet complete.

The AG story in the DOJ is just one indication that they don't have 100% cooperation, even from
Repugs.

I'd venture to guess that we really have no idea what might be ahead of us as we move toward
2008 --- and reflecting on how they've kept their people in top leadership positions over the
past 50 years and more ---- I'd say it's possible they will hold onto control still.

Who's talking about this now --- ?
Almost no one ---
Certainly not Democrats ---

Send them The Conspirators by Al Martin book. He was in Naval Intelligence and testified before Congress. The media and many older Congressmen knew how corrupt the Bush gang is.

It is upsetting and even horrifying but we must face the truth.

If they can overthrow the Chief Executive of the USA, and noone did a damn thing ...... how do you stop them in Alabama of all places.

This is the effect of the 2000 Junta come to roost on Dems for doing Zip, Squat, Nada.

"The Bush's Junta stole 2000!" is the real message the Rs are so damn defensive about!

when the computers first came in ---

See: Votescam by two journalists --- Jim & Ken Collier
One of them ran for office back then and first became aware of the computer manipulations in counts--
They book was suppressed, but you can read it at the website.
They're both deceased now, but the website it kept going by the family trying to get the story out.

CBS: More Prosecutorial Misconduct in Siegelman Case
Scott Horton - February 24, 2008 - http://harpers.org/archive/2008/02/hbc-90002487

CBS aired its long-awaited feature on the prosecution and imprisonment of former Alabama Governor Don E. Siegelman this evening at 7:00. In a stunning move of censorship, the transmission was blocked across the northern third of Alabama by CBS affiliate WHNT, which is owned by interests of the Bass Family. Those who were in the zone of censorship or who missed it, can catch the whole segment here: ...............

29. Again ... the usual STENCH
Again ... the usual STENCH is emanating from the boardrooms of the major corporate media establishments--who let all this happen without reporting the crime being committed AGAINST THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF ALABAMA, as well as against Siegelman.

Dear Chariman Martin,

Since NBC/General Electric, Time/Warner Cable, Viacom, Disney, and the others have failed to serve the public interest in yet another egregious criminal abuse of privilege against the people of the United States, please revoke their broadcast licenses and confiscate all their holdings in property and telecommunications equipment and infrastructure on behalf of the victims.

Thanks, Kev.

Edited on Mon Feb-25-08 04:59 PM by higher class
I've been listening to NPR all day and I've not heard one word about the airing on 60 minutes - including the Neil Cohen show - where it should have been covered. Disgusting silence. Dan Burton, Jesse Helms, and Strom Thurmond won - they campaigned against that liberal station and threatened to pull public funding. Yes, they won. NPR - a grand disappointment since the threats and whatever deal was made.

If anyone heard them covering it, I will correct my words.

The day is not over and I have to run out.

Now that I wrote that - have any of the Air America hosts been talking about it?

39. Link to Detailed Review of 60 Minutes Report by Horton
Mr. Horton of Harpers Magazine has been one of the main investigative reporters on this injustice. Here is his analysis of the 60 Minutes report. He says 60 Minutes has tons of additional material that did not fit into their 15 minute report, and he urges people to ask them to do a follow up story.
