CONYERS: Sixty Minutes Piece on Justice Department Selective Prosecution
Submitted by JC on February 24, 2008 - 10:55pm. - http://johnconyers.com/node/201

CBS VIDEO embedded.

CBS's Sixty Minutes tonight covered the story of the prosecution of former Alabama governor Don Siegelman. The news magazine show features comments by Republican insiders about what they allege to be politically motivated prosecutions against Democratic officials.

One Republican state attorney general summed up the Siegelman prosecution this way:

"They targeted Don Siegelman because they could not beat him fair and square. This was a Republican state and he was the one Democrat they could never get rid of."

The prosecution was led by a U.S. Attorney in Alabama married to the campaign manager of Siegelman's Republican gubernatorial opponent.

2. I was kind of disappointed...
CBS could have dug deeper - a lot of the reporting was missing other facts - it was very short. It would have been ok if was an introductory piece.

We here at DU have brought more facts as reported.

and considering the same time slot with the Oscars...the exposure is quite low.

:(

8. I thought it was good in that it was clearly presented for what was presented.
For now, it seems to be an opener. The Republican lawyer is a hero of sorts as there are many people who are or lean Republican still apply logic and credibility. Perhaps this will open the door.

Whisked off to jail, manicled.

People here who have been saying Rove and Rovians are desparate are exactly right.

Look at the time frame for this - arrogance reigned.

They have to go after that Judge. Next flank in fighting back.

We can't let this die.

14. "Look at the time frame for this - arrogance reigned." Yeah, they stole 2000 from Gore.
So, taking the 'Bama governor's seat must have been like a walk in the park, by comparison. If you can steal the Presidency of the United States and almost noone even wimpers a complaint .....

As I said on the other thread, I hope the good people of Alabama don't have their network connection mysteriously cut this evening.

4. THEY DID
WHNT, the CBS station in North Alabama, had a mysterious “service interruption” just during the Siegelman segment of 60 minuets. The Station blaimed it on a problem from CBS in NYC but there was not problem. The station purposely blocked this part from being shown and the station is owned by a heavily republican family.

9. Dear Mac2
I am very sorry to say this to you, but it is my honest opinion that the Democrats are in on it as well.

I say this in full risk of being kicked off of this blog.

Let's look at the situation:

1) October 2002: Democrats join Republicans in voting for war in Iraq. In 2005, $9 Billion is "lost" in Iraq. I firmly believe that this "loss" (which was NEVER properly investigated by the Administration nor by Congress) is payment from the neocons to the Democrats for "taking a dive" for them.

2) November 2004: Despite literally hundreds of anomalies in the election (ALL of which just to happened to fall into Bu$h Co's favor), Sen. John Kerry quickly concedes the election.

3) Special Election in California: in North San Diego County, Republican Brian Bilbray is quickly announced the winner and is whisked off to DC for swearing in... despite the fact that the Secretary of State never even finalized the election. This maneuver short circuits any election dispute and/or recount. The Democrat makes a quick rush to concede the election.

4) November 2006: Despite gaining control of both Chambers of Congress, an estimated 3+ million votes were "disappeared," especially in Florida. A couple of Democratic candidates appeals to newly installed Speaker Pelosi, who buries their petitions in Committee.

5) All through 2007: Despite election promises to "Bring our Troops Home," Democrats in both Chambers repeatedly capitulate to the Administration. In July, Sen. Reid schedules an all nighter... but that was merely showboating for the American people. He, like Speaker Pelosi, were NEVER serious in ending unConstitutional wars.

No Mac2, the reason that Democrats are not seriously pushing against Gov. Seigelman, is because Karl Rove and the neocons have gotten to them too... with serious cash and/or power positions.

Mac2, I hope you will join me in an unprecedented effort to remove the "Go Along to Get Along" Democrats in the primaries this year, 2010, 2012, etc. etc. etc.

I can respect that. I don't see it very often among the ranks of the republicans but when I see it I can respect it.

16. OR< they are doing the McCain again, like with Abramoff before 2004.
McCain covered up Abramoff to save Bush, and runs on how he investigated Abramoff.
That was the ultimate hypocrisy, a fake investigation, and he campaigns on it!!!

Do not trust anyone working for McCain! It could be totally insincere and entirely political.

CBS: More Prosecutorial Misconduct in Siegelman Case
Scott Horton - February 24, 2008 - http://harpers.org/archive/2008/02/hbc-90002487

CBS aired its long-awaited feature on the prosecution and imprisonment of former Alabama Governor Don E. Siegelman this evening at 7:00. In a stunning move of censorship, the transmission was blocked across the northern third of Alabama by CBS affiliate WHNT, which is owned by interests of the Bass Family. Those who were in the zone of censorship or who missed it, can catch the whole segment here: ...............

20. K & R
I am grateful that there are Americans out there, who despite their political leanings, fight for justice still.

The Siegleman story is atrocious. Secondarily, I never thought I'd see the day that our TV would be censored in this way. THANK G*d for the Internet.
