I know her in real life and have worked with her on and off
for over 10 years and she’s, in my experience, hardly a friend
to the feminist… or .. to talented women seeking power seats
in production that pay as well as their male counterparts….
she’s an uncle tom feminist type, talks the talk, walks the
misogynist walk …she’s also a bit of a queen bee type too..
.surrounds herself with male drones who don’t challenge or
threaten her hegemony and then she marginalizes other
potentially talented females and relates them into servile
roles, taking out the garbage, ordering lunch, etc… if you
walk into the office of her show 30 rock it’s the same kind of
thing I’ve been seeing for years in the “comedy” business…(I
qualify this because the “Comedy” genre is the most
discriminatory towards women in my experience …in film
production, I am constantly surrounded by talented male and
female producers, executive producers, production designers,
accountants, lawyers, so much so, that I don’t feel like
discrimination is a problem anymore, the playing field feels
even and real… but when I work on a comedy show, the cultural
difference is so startling, I feel so disappointed and begin
to emotionally brace myself to have some male guy around my
age took one look at me and send me out to get his producer
coffee… this actually happened to me last time I was in the
SNL studios… I just shook my head and walked away.. I couldn’t
believe that just happened because I was a woman and looked
youngish enough that it was culturally assumed I was there to
be the coffee girl…
Like many of the other shows I’ve worked on for SNL, males are
the overwhelming majority in her office and have most of the
seats of real power… yeah she’s friends with Amy Poehler and I
know Amy too, and she’s the real deal in real life, although I
don’t entirely get that impersonation of Hillary she does… it
came off kind of… anti-Hillary…and I’m all for roasting
candidates… but I was discomforted a little because, I am
personally biased… (I am a Hillary supporter… she is an
inspiration to me - She is one of the reasons I eventually
chose the law profession)… ironically, I found Amy Poehler, in
real life, to be a very supportive and authentic person, and
deeply conscious human being, who was generous and gifted and
not the mirror hungry jackass type… working with tina was a
disappointment for me personally and professionally… I held
her work in such high esteem, and clearly her work is super
and excellent and speaks volumes for itself… but my feelings
are that she was not helpful to women who were talented and
worthy of professional advancement and recognition in the
office environment…and in a place like New York City, where
the rent and the cost of living is outrageous… making
professional strides is not something I fight for the right to
earn just to gratify my self esteem, self worth and ego…
gaining professional advancement is necessary for economic
survival in this very challenging city.
So, yes, I appreciate this pro-Hillary bit tina did on SNL,
but it would be equally as amazing to me if she would become
more conscious of these issues at work when the cameras are
off and there’s no hope for ratings and mass attention… the
only reward for talking action and showing respect and
gratitude towards talented young female writers and producers
is the satisfaction of mentoring well deserving and
competitive women into influential positions of power, with
opportunities to advance… that pay REAL salaries…
