While I fully support our President
and have done so in the face of a lot of negativity, if he signs a healthcare bill which does not at the minimum support a ban on pre-existing conditions as promised, we are finished. As a 2-time breast cancer survivor this is my bottom line. :(

Please talk me down!

1. No preexisting conditions is the foundation of the bill

Its the reason that they have to have mandates.

The likelihood that this latest rumor is true is highly unlikely.

10. Rawstory

They are reading into a statement that children will have no preconditions that then means that adults will be.

It doesn't make any sense.

22. they are an unreliable source.
I've noticed that over the last five years--a lot of stuff they report never comes true.

14. Well, I read this post today
which set me wondering?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x7562719

This is not a call-out. I just wonder if this is true, that people would have to go without insurance for six months, drop what they may already have and wait for six months or go six more months without insurance, in order qualify for the government plan? It's really unfortunate if this is true.

It's good to know that this is a place where one can come to and expect most people to still believe he's going to be able to pull it off. I really want him to!

6. Whenever anyone starts a thread with "While I fully support our President"
Edited on Mon Jan-25-10 03:24 PM by MoJoWorkin
or the phrase, "Please talk me down," it rings off alarm bells.

I am very tired of any hand wringing at this point. Negativity has plenty of space over in GD and GDP.

A ban on pre-existing conditions is one of the cornerstones of President Obama's Health Care Plan.

Suggested reading:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/health-care/plan

For God's sake, haven't you ever heard him talking about how his mom had to fight the insurance company (while she was dying of cancer) regarding whether they were going to cover her, as they were trying to say it was a pre-existing condition? He brought it up time and time again during his town halls( I saw most of them live-streamed). This point is PERSONAL with him. It is the one thing that would be in there, regardless.

Sorry, but I have about had it with all these wild accusations, half-truths, outright lies, negativity, nastiness, knee jerking, hand wringing, etc.

Here in the BOG, I just don't want to see any more of it.

7. I'm not a hand-wringer.
Look at my post history before lumping them into the category of the bulk of the nay-sayers (this is why I posted this on BOG, because of wanting to be with people who do support our president).

I am not accusing anyone using lies, half-truths, negativity, nastiness, knee-jerking and anything of the kind. However, I am a realist and if something like this does come to pass it certainly change my mind about how effective the President really is.

11. I am just fed up with negativity.
The "talk me down" phrase is hand-wringing, at least to me. Rachel Maddow famously used it a lot, for example, when she just knew that Obama was making a fatal mistake during the campaign, etc. I think Rachel is very intelligent, but, she is somewhat of a hand-wringer.

Also, I have seen too many posts that start out with the old "while I support the President" statement---and they reeaallly don't.

I wasn't lumping you in with anything other than thinking negatively in your comments on this post(I don't go looking up old posts), and that you perhaps are listening too much to those who do twist and distort, over in GD and GDP,etc. I guess that didn't come across correctly.

I did find it odd that you wouldn't know that because of his mother, President Obama would have a passion for making sure that pre-existing conditions was included in any health care reform package. I doubt many who supported him during the campaign, and into his Presidency, would not know that.

12. Why would you think that I wouldn't know
about his mother? I've not been hibernating all these months from the media, plus I listened to his book which went into those personal issues.

You're certainly not helping by being supportive of someone who has honest questions by hurling accusations which are based on broad-based judgments. Why don't you try to be a part of the solution instead of part of the problem by answering questions. Other posters answered with "that rumor is unsubstantiated, etc." which is reasonable to me. Take out your own negativity on someone who has actually earned it instead of someone who is fighting for progressive values to win out.

13. BTW
It was my understanding that it was ok to ask questions about Obama's policies in the BOG, unless you feel threatened by it. I specifically stated that the reason I come here to ask is not to be shut down by the other's negativity on GD.

If you don't get that then please just put me on ignore.

you got some answers.

It's all good.

You could be concerned,

whether it was required.

I believe it is one of the cornerstone of healthcare and is going nowhere other than
to become law.

But that's just me.

16. I know how you feel about wanting to ask a question
but being afraid of being shut down by negativity. We should be able to discuss things in the BOG, and get educated about things we're unclear on, without the tone that dominates GD/GDP. I think we should all give each other the benefit of the doubt and assume that we're coming from the same place, unless proven otherwise.

These are complicated issues. I like being able to pick other people's brains about them, and learn, without being bullied. I think your questions were just fine.

17.  Sorry if I am a bit paranoid, it seems I've read so much hate that I can't be objective anymore.
Guess it is time I quit this place for a while---even the BOG. I can no longer deal with it.

Maybe another reason it has gotten to me is because I put no one on ignore, as I want to see what is being said,

I have been around here since 2004, and was a strong Dean supporter, and can't understand what he has been doing lately, as I feel he has undermined progress for the Democratic agenda. I have asked my name be removed from his old organization, DFA, for that reason.

I will devote my time to OFA, and the DNC, and just try and help elect Democrats--yes even moderates, for even a moderate Democrat is better than today's brand of Republican. Coming from SW MO, where the Repub fundies are large and in charge, it has made me a Yellow Dog Democrat. I became a Kennedy liberal at age 15, when I canvassed for JFK. That experience made me a political animal, and I never changed my stripes since.

I will fight for, and with, this President with all my heart and soul. I believe President Obama has already worked harder for us than any of his predecessors (that I have witnessed in my lifetime) and that he will truly go down in history as one of the great ones. He has accomplished so much in only his first year(and he has just begun). I am truly irritated that this is not what appears in the news and especially here on DU. The dominant story is he has failed? Give us a break, already.

When I first met Barack Obama in October, 2004, at a southern IL farm, I got to talk with him a bit-- the big crowds would come later. When I attended one of his town halls in Springfield, in 2008, and the later fall rally where he drew 40,000 in Springfield (unheard of for a Democrat in this part of the world) it was quite evident how lucky I was to have decided to go to that farm to see him that day. I knew at that 2004 meeting he would be President some day, as he had it all--intellect, empathy, honesty, charisma, etc. I had met a lot of politicians since my early days, but he was different, and was head and shoulders above anyone else. I still sometimes cannot believe he is really our President, but I am so relieved and happy that he is.

It was an honor to canvass for him, and donate to his campaign--our campaign for the only bright future possible that I can see for our country. I will continue, as long as I am physically, and financially able, to work on his, and our behalf.

19. Good post
I'm new to DU and what I see makes me angry. Obama has been called a liar, crook (Nixon), LGBT hating president, warmonger, etc. Comments that say fuck Obama and more. I'm shocked but this has been an eye opener coming here. Now I see why Democrats are portrayed as weak. We spend a lot of time fighting amongst ourselves and Republicans are enjoying every minute of it. Even our elected officials are falling into the Republican trap. They should know better. We say Republicans are dumb (and they are) but they are smart enough to stick together.

Someone questioned me about my world view here at DU. Hah, acting like they know me just because I don't choose to attack the president. Of course I disagree with the president at times. I'm not going to sit at my computer and spout a bunch of hate filled comments on an Internet site for everyone to see. I know little about politics so I trust the man I campaigned for. Some of these people recycle bs from other sites and try to come across as if they have a degree in political science. Not to mention every blogger has suddenly become an economist.

I don't understand how we got in this mess? We have so many smart people. :sarcasm:

20. I appreciate your statement--
"I know little about politics so I trust the man I campaigned for." Amen to that. It is really painful for me to see him torn down by our own people. There's enough of that from the other side. Do you read the KC Star? Case in point--hateful column from Charles Krauthammer in today's paper. I only skimmed it and wish I hadn't done that.

25. No cancelled the KC Star
a while ago. Right now I'm concerned with the serial rapist we have roaming the streets. I live further south than the area he's hitting. But he seems to be moving further south. It's time for me to start paying more attention to what's going on in our neck of the woods. I'm done with this political atmosphere for now. The hate against our president is overwhelming.

At one time the president had a 50+ approval rating in Mo. I haven't checked it lately. We did so well with Bush ya know. :sarcasm: My sister has been watching CNN for two hours now. I just want to rip the tv off the wall. :grr:

21. What a wonderful post. Your account of meeting Obama in 2004 is special. All of the
words you used to describe him "intellect, empathy, honesty, charisma"--yes, yes and double yes! I believe in him so strongly and believe he truly wants to do what is right and best for the country. I campaigned hard for him also and was rewarded with a hug! He met with a small group of campaigners before a rally in KC and I was one of the lucky ones.

I hope you're going to stay around. I think we're about the same age--I was born in 1942.

23. There's plenty more to do to help
our country than DU..I fully support you, although I'll miss you and anyone who doesn't come to the BOG.

I didn't have anyone on Ignore, either, for 10 months, except a few from the primaries and then I realized I didn't need to have them off ignore to know what they're saying bc it's the same damn thing over and over and over again. ENOUGH.

We got ourselves a Fine President and all my family and friends think so out in the real world. I don't care what the regressives on the internet go all paranoia batshit crazy over next just to let their own personal rage hang out.

There's still plenty not on ignore to know what the rage du jour is. I just mostly have the loudest chronic whiners on ignore.

Thank you, MojoWorkin' for all you did to get him elected..just think what the regressives could be whining about if he hadn't been.

26. I think this is a wonderful thread,
and I ask everyone to hang on, and not get dejected and leave. This should be the worse time, as the Pres. hasn't passed health care yet, and I think Americans are pretty weary after being manipulated and lied to by the media. I think he can only go up from here....and if he doesn't, it will say more about this country than it will about Pres. Obama.
