A Do-Something President, Not Afraid Of Big Things

Earlier this week, Congress passed financial reform which will be signed by President Obama in the days ahead. As Sheryl Gay Stolberg notes in the New York Times, this marks the third economy-wide statute that has been passed in a year and a half under Obama.

The financial regulatory bill is the final piece of a legislative hat trick that also included the stimulus bill and the landmark new health care law. Over the last 18 months, Mr. Obama and the Democratic Congress have made considerable inroads in passing what could be the most ambitious agenda in decades.

In a mere one-and-a-half years, Obama has pushed through Congress bills more far-reaching than any President since Nixon. If he stopped now, his policy legacy would be the largest overall since Reagan and the largest domestically since Nixon or Johnson.

The charges of socialism, are of course, ridiculous, as both health insurance reform and financial reform left the market in a central role in these areas. However, both Obama’s critics and supporters are right to note that he has made a big difference. With 2.5-6.5 years to go in his presidency, the potential is there for him to reach his goal of being a truly “transformative” President.

Sure would be nice to see them give Obama credit for all that he's done.

There's plenty of forums for you to whine about your personal feelings on what road the President is on but the BOG is not one of them.

And really, what the fuck is the point of these comments? Bringing up their children only shows pettiness on your side. Would it make you happier if Chelsea marries some guy flipping hamburgers at McDonald's? Did it ever occur to you that maybe she is marrying the man she is marrying because she loves him and not because of the "class" he is in? Huh? Are you saying anyone who marries "into the banking class" is somehow evil or wrong?

As for what "Barack and Michelle" want for their children, I'm sure the only thing they want for them is to be happy. That's what most parents want for their children. And whether they marry a banker or the night clerk at the local 7-11, as sure as he makes them happy, I'm sure "Barack and Michelle" will open be fine with it.

Either way, it's none of your business and if you had any decency at all you would rethink your holier-than-thou stance!

Barack came from "solid middle class"? Is that why he knows what it was like to buy food using food stamps, back in the day when you had to literally tear them out of the booklet like coupons?

Is that why he and Michelle only finished paying off their student loans a few years ago?

Is that why he had to be raised in part by his grandma?

Please bring yourself up to speed on the 1001 things Obama has done to level the field for the working class. I'm at work and don't have time to go all up in it.

Barack Obama is President of the United States. When the "ruling class" meets with him, they call *him* "sir". I think it is safe to assume that the "ruling class" is hoping they're lucky enough to have one of their sons marry his girls, not the other way around.

Republicans win.

If you frame the argument as "Obama fails", that helps our cause how?

I don't know if they appear as "supercilious, harsh and unsympathetic" -- but I do know Gibbs appears far too many times at WH press briefings with a "deer-in-the-headlights" look.

He is essentially brilliant at what he does, but is better BEHIND the scenes, I believe. I would love to see a fast-thinking big mouth along the lines of Anthony Weiner, Alan Grayson or Claire Macaskill as WH spokesperson -- with the caveat being that they know how to rein it in as well as put it out there.
