This might be a better alternative to the greatest page
with the greatest page now being dominated by an invisible army of non-posting reccers and unreccers, this might be a good alternative as that same group can't control which topics are most discussed or gets the most positive reccs. For example my thread on Obama's community organizing has gotten over 60 recs, even though the invisible army has it back at zero.

1. Thanks!
That is an interesting page. The rec game is getting complex.

2. Yeah, so if OPs like this are posted in here..
a lot of us we'll get to read them.

I don't even go to the greatest anymore.

3. My lesson from being starless was that one can rec/unrec
Even if they are not a donor to the site. I thought that was interesting.

After many months away, I have returned to a DU I don't recognize, and certainly a "greatest" page that makes no sense to me!

4. I wouldn't mind the idiotic "unrec/rec" wars if the Greatest page actually had good stuff on it
So much of the crap on there is utter GARBAGE. Kick and Rec threads; threads with nothing but imbecilic pictures; idiotic posts with 5 lines of text that say NOTHING beyond basically "Obama sold us out!"

It's f'ing embarrassing. And the fact that 90% of them come from one forum (GD) and are ALWAYS in the vein of "Obama sold us out!" has rendered the Greatest Page a complete joke. Even if there were 10 or so "Obama sold us out!" posts complemented by another ten "Obama is doing okay" that would be one thing. But we all know anything even remotely close to saying that this President is doing the best he can or (even worse!) is actually doing a good job (Gasp!!) is immediately unrec'd to oblivion.

The Greatest Page is like DU's Dunce Cap right now. It's embarrassing as hell.

6. The whole rec/unrec thing needs to be changed somehow:
Some possibilities:

• Make the list of who rec'd and unrec'd a thread public. I say this as someone who recs and unrecs threads. Your posts are public (obviously), why shouldn't your rec vote be?
• Make it so that you have to actually post in a thread before being able to vote.
• Limit recs and unrecs to donors.
• Have a minimum post count before you can rec/unrec (maybe this is already in place, I don't know).
• Limit the number of times everyone can rec/unrec per day.

7. I agree. I used to go to the Greatest page every day
and would always find good info there. It's become a real cesspool. Wading through all the absolute junk to find anything worth reading is a chore. I always figured the idea of the Greatest page was to make it easier to find things WORTH reading all in one place. Now, it's like the exact opposite of that. And ditto to the comments about the rec/unrec wars. It's ridiculous.

8. Like you I treated it the same way
it was a quick way to see the best threads. It's so sad to see how far things have sunk.

9. A case in point

this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x80261

which simply explains why all Democratic Senators are united on the bill has 120 Recs and is fifth but with now over 45 unrecs it will never get to the front page.

Ironically it gets to the front page as a journal.

45 unrecs and basically no one has challenged a single fact in the OP.

I am sure that if I posted "Ice Cream is good" it would generate 20 unrecs as a matter of course.

11. Can we all agree that the unrec system sucks big time, no matter your views?
Perhaps we should go back to the way it was!

14. I have perhaps a dumb question...
Where/how are you seeing the actual number of recs and unrecs? I can't figure out how to see those totals.
