FDA says avoid toothpaste made in China
By KEVIN FREKING, Associated Press Writer
5 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The government warned consumers on Friday to avoid using toothpaste made in China because it may contain a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze. Out of caution, the Food and Drug Administration said, people should throw away toothpaste with labeling that says it was made in China. The FDA is concerned that these products may contain diethylene glycol.

The agency is not aware of any poisoning from toothpaste in the United States, but it did find the antifreeze ingredient in a shipment at the U.S. border and at two retail stores: a Dollar Plus store in Miami and a Todo A Peso store in Puerto Rico.

Officials said they are primarily concerned about toothpaste sold at bargain retail outlets. The ingredient in question, called DEG, is used as a lower-cost sweetener and thickening agent. The highest concentration of the chemical found in toothpaste so far was between 3 percent and 4 percent of the product's overall weight.

"It does not belong in toothpaste even in small concentrations," said the FDA's Deborah M. Autor.

How about the stores are FORCED TO REMOVE THESE ITEMS??

I guess this is yet another example of Bush's "you decide" society.

4. You mean labeling will be required/enforced so that we can actually
KNOW what might contain poison? In BushWorld? I'm going back to baking soda. The hell with this shit.

17. Next time you shop, check the box.
There is often more information on the box of toothpaste than on the tube.

7. I'm not buyng any Chinese anything ever again.
Except clothes, probably, as that seems unavoidable. I was shocked to see Chinese garlic at Whole Foods the other day. WTF? We can't grow our own garlic any more?

8. Union Square.
A friend in Auburn, New York complained about Chinese garlic. She said it lacked flavor.

The way to spot the difference when it is unlabeled:

American garlic will have a small "brush" left from the roots.
Chinese garlic removes the entire root plane.

Get New York garlic in Union Square. It gets more difficult to buy food (and toothpaste, etc.) all the time.

11. Most fruits grown in China are flavorless
- melons, pears, oranges, apples, you name it.

16. Why is that?
Do you happen to know?

One person told me that Chinese garlic looks as though it is about to expire even before you buy it.

By coincidence, my friend in Auburn said she bought it, and it was lacking flavor.

Tomatoes are fairly flavorless until it is tomato season, and I get to buy New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania tomatoes at the farmers' market.

15. Same here about being out of luck if I can't make it
there on Saturdays.

I try to buy as much as I can when I am there. I'm really trying to avoid anything that I can't identify.

12. I'm boycotting Chinese goods, and buy most of my clothes
at resale shops. Several support charities, so a double-good. I can find socks, camis, and bras not made in China, but underwear have been a problem. But I've found this:

www.americanapparel.net

and will be buying a lot of things from them in future.

It can be done, with a little work.

13. I agree.
My pets only eat foods from companies that will tell me where their food is produced, and can give sources for their ingredients. I pissed off my vet when I told him I wouldn't feed my cat Hill's anymore. But now, he's prescribing Wysong. The power of the informed consumer!!

I buy nothing from China anymore.

18. The problem comes in, for me at least, with stuff like vegetarian sausage that has lots of wheat
gluten in it. I used to eat a ton of that stuff, now I've mostly sworn it off.

I'd like to think the Wheat Gluten isn't from China, but how do I know?

20. Yeah, but isn't China providing gluten for bread, etc baked in the US?
I think I heard that on The News Hour W/Jim Lehrer yesterday. The FDA can't keep up with all the imported ingredients.

This is really nervewracking, but if I was a US manufacturer, I'd would market my products as free of Chinese import ingredients. A new market is springing up for that.

25. I bake my own bread, and I DON'T ADD GLUTEN or use the high-gluten
flour.

And I doubt that ALL wheat gluten in the US is from China. We do grow wheat here, too.

19. That's not such a bad idea.
Maybe we can find out what is required.

Most people have fluoridated water, so I doubt fluoride would be required in homemade toothpaste.

NO WAY can we now refuse Chinese goods of any kind.
