'Wire' Report: HBO Series Filming at 'Wash Post'

By E&P Staff

Published: June 02, 2007 9:00 AM ET

NEW YORK The popular HBO series "The Wire" is filming at The Washington Post this weekend.

The Web site for Washington City Paper revealed Friday that the series is looking at the mass media this year. Its creator, David Simon used to work up the road at The Sun in Baltimore.

City Paper said this was a memo sent to newsroom staff at the Post:

"The HBO series The Wire will be filming a short sequence in our 4th floor newsroom this Sunday morning, June 3, beginning at 6 a.m. The majority of the filming will take place in the area around Deb Heard’s office in Style, although there will be a scene in which the characters walk through the middle of the 4th floor newsroom toward 15th Street. In addition to the actors and crew, there will be several dozen extras on site, sitting at desks visible in the background shots.

"We don’t know for sure yet which desks will be needed so if you are on 4, please remove any valuables or sensitive material from your desktop before you leave for the weekend. You don’t need to 'clean up,' however; they want it to look like a real newsroom. No papers or other items on your desk will be disturbed, but the extras will have to look like they’re working so they may handle the desk phone and act like they’re using the computer. The camera and crew will be cleared out of the newsroom by noon at the latest, so this should have no impact on our daily operations. Let me know if you have any questions."

1. Great show about crime and corruption in Baltimore.
Great writing, acting, direction. Three dimensional characters.

6. You can get a great start renting or buying the earlier seasons first.

You are REALLY going to be surprised.

Some of the characters are unforgettable.

I just remembered:

There's a rerun of the last season on HBO tonight, but you might want to start at the first, actually, if you haven't seen The Wire.

BET also has weekly reruns of previous programs, from earlier in the series.

8. That'd be a great idea; it also sounds like a show my DH could
really get into as he loves this genre. Thanks!

11. Just remembered something: The Wire has its own website, with looks at the featured characters,
summaries of episodes, etc.!

9. The red hat to ID the drug dealers
The cops are on the roof with cameras.

I have the first three seasons on DVD. I think I'll watch them again. I don't get HBO anymore.

If you like crime shows. Extremely well done.

I just flashed on one scene, I can only paraphrase.

The cop is talking to a kid whose friend was killed. The dead kid had a habit of cheating in some gambling game and winning. So week after week this kid took their money and the other kids kept turning it over, all the while knowing he was cheating.

So the cop says, "He kept cheating you, why would you all let him play?"

The kid says, "We gotta let him play. This is America!"

5. The Wire is fantastic!
I watched the first two or three series when I had Netflix.

Dominic West (a Brit) is phenom, the writing is superb, the
reality amazing and disturbing.

Poor Baltimore. It gets such a bad rap in detective
series, but maybe it's deserved.

I was completely absorbed in series two which took
place on the cargo wharfs mostly. That was a whole world
opened up, I can tell you.

Also, the Black rap way of talking is very interesting. I
learned practically the whole vocabulary and lingo by
watching this show. Then, when I saw the Black rap
scene spoofed on Hustle, I really appreciated it.

One of the best and funniest parts for me was watching
a white guy take on the Black rap culture.. both on The
Wire and on the episode of Hustle. lol
