FDA: "throw away toothpaste with labeling that states it was made in China."

CHINA TAKES ANOTHER GIANT STEP TOWARDS BECOMING JUST LIKE THE REPUBLICAN VISION OF AMERICA-- A PLACE WHERE WORKERS GET SCREWED OVER WITH IMPUNITY

Ken and I have been warning you about the consequences of the e coli conservatives' disdain for effective government and how that has poisoned our pets, our food, our medicine and, now, our toothpaste. according to today's Washington Post Bush Regime trade non-regulators and Food and Drug non-Adminstration employees may be responsible for some of us-- though only ones looking to save money on cheap products by buying Chinese crap-- may have been brushing with a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze. Although DWT warned our readers of this hazard on May 20th-- in connection to a report on the complicity with the Chinese government of Republican Senate Minority Leader Miss McConnell (KY)-- Bush's criminally incompetent F.D.A. waited until today to say something about it. Gee, not everybody reads DWT, fellas.

FDA: "throw away toothpaste with labeling that states it was made in China"

Out of caution, the Food and Drug Administration said, people should throw away toothpaste with labeling that states it was made in China. FDA is concerned that these products may contain diethylene glycol.

The agency is not aware of any reports in the United States of poisoning from toothpaste, but it did find the antifreeze ingredient in a shipment at the U.S. border and at two retail stores: a Dollar Plus store in Miami and a Todo A Peso store in Puerto Rico.

Um... even if Puerto Rico isn't an actual state, Miami, last time I checked-- and regardless of their bizarre political system-- is still part of the U.S.A. Has anyone ever told the FDA the little story about closing the barn door after the horse has run away?

1. ...I pray you are not offended by my saying this but...
Regardless of the real and serious danger of toothpaste that may have the stuff that killed those people in Panama a few weeks ago, the framing of the headline, the text, and that picture of a bunch of Chinese Wal-Mart workers, suggests to me an attempt to portray Chinese people in a negative light. (And no I am not Chinese but I am noticing as a "white" person what the implication seems supposed to be.) I'm concerned that other people might take that impression from this post as well. I would find that highly unfortunate to say the least.

This is not the fault of the people in that graphic.

3. There is nothing in the photo, the post
or headline that implies it's the workers' fault. In fact, the headline suggests the exact opposite.

4. I didn't take it that way
The OP's point was that corporations rule everything, whether here or in China.

Profits rule the world. And corporations obviously value profits above all else. And if they should cut a few corners, shouldn't we call them on it?

Chinese businesses have been notorious for this "corner cutting", especially where it concerns exports.

No, the people in the picture aren't at fault. They merely chose to work for the people who offered them the job.

5. As a white person

I didn't think of that implication at all. If you're worried about what *other* people will think, perhaps you can relax.

6. Yup. , but there's enough plausible deniability available for you to be dismissed as "oversensitive"

2. A little off-topic, but
Looking at the picture of Chinese Walmart employees reminds me of this:

Chinese 'create Wal-Mart union'
US retail giant Wal-Mart, which has drawn criticism over allegations it is union unfriendly, has reportedly seen staff in China start their first union.

The union was the initiative of some 30 Wal-Mart workers in the south-east province of Fujian, the official Xinhua news agency said.

~

Wal-Mart, which started doing business in China in 1996, has previously said that its employees are free to set up unions if they wish and has insisted it conforms with Chinese law.

These workers have the right to unionize! If they haven't done it already.

8. I clicked the FDA link and got "Page Not Found." It was on the FDA site,

but had one of those "the usual page may have been moved or you got the link wrong," etc. messages.

13. According to the P & G website, Crest is only made in

Cincinnati and North Carolina. They have a 1-800 number, at least my tube of Crest does. I used baking soda last night.

I'm wondering about mouthwash now, have the Chinese been spiking any of it with diethylene glycol? Or something else that's deadly?
