Open letter to Gore and Clark: Time to Step Up
Open letter to Gore and Clark: Time to Step Up
by wild salmon
Sun Jun 03, 2007 at 03:44:51 PM EDT

As a disillusioned former Dem turned Indy, I would like to lob out into the blogoshpere an appeal for the Reluctant Leaders to step up.

Al Gore and Wes Clark:

America needs you.

The Planet needs you.

And it is precisely because you are reluctant to step up and lead, that I feel very strongly that you are the only two potential presidential/vice presidential candidates that can actually stop this trainwreck.

wild salmon's diary :: ::

I have to say as I skim over the bios and listen to the soundbites of the Presidential Wannabes that ALL are seriously lacking in some major capacity.

In a time of peace, or a time where the consequences of our short term actions were not so dire, I would be fine with any of the prospective Dems.

But these are not ordinary times.

Wes and Al both know this, more than anyone in the current political matrix.

I distrust all the current frontrunners, in large part because it is obvious to me that what motivates them is a lust for power and their own over-inflated egos. I am not really willing to support or vote for any of them.

That observation applies equally across both parties.

Sad but true.

As an Indy, I have no loyalty to any political party. I used to be a loyal Dem, and I was a shameless Kerry promoter in 2003-2004, but those days are over. When I look at the current state of both parties I see GOP and GOP-lite. The Dem Party I grew up with and supported for decades is no where to be seen these days.

In this time of global crisis, both geopolitical and environmental, the world needs true leaders. When I peruse the current crop of presidential prospects, none of them fits the bill except for the two that are reluctant to run.

In times of crisis, such as we are in today, the only true leaders would be the reluctant ones. For who in their right mind would want to take this shit on? It is precisely for this reason that I keep turning back to Gore and Clark and have become convinced that they really are our only hope to divert this almost inevitable catastrophe- both political and environmental- that the current leadership has created.

Sometimes it is necessary for those who would rather not lead, to lead, because in the course of human events, it is necessary. It is my strong belief that these times are not ordinary times, that big choices must be made that will impact all future generations on this planet. Gore and Clark know this, I know they know this, and it is probably why they are reluctant to step up.

But we need them to step up, and step up now.

Our futures, our children's futures, and the future of this planet depend on it.

I realize I am one lone voice in the wilderness, and at the end of the day, it probably doesn't amount to much, but as a meditation and a prayer, I am lobbing it out there.

Al & Wes : We need you.

What wild salmon said.

:applause:

2. asked by whom?
they are asked all the time in the blogosphere. Gore is asked at every booksigning and t.v. appearance.

Should I purchase an engraved invitiation? If it will work - I will do it!!

Gore for the environment, Clark to repair the mess that bush left with Iraq and the military. Both will take leadership and a generation to repair.

13. Great writing but I think WE are the heroes America needs
We can talkall we want about how some superman like Gore or Clark's going to save us, but the future lies in our hands not theirs.

15. Not supermens.......just real patriots, who really do care more about
this country than their personal future!

There just aren't too many of those in politics these days.....although I do believe Obama to be somewhat on track there!

17. I can't say all three are any more important than us
In fact I think that's a lot of the problem with American politics is that people create superheroes to save us and when they betray us we act so shocked...we are the heroes we've been looking for and I don't think Gore or Clark even want to get in the race and there's not much need for them we have a lot of diversity in the current primaries IMO.

22. I disagree with you ,,,,,,
It ain't about superheroes (but obviously that's what you'd like the "angle" to be)....it is about smart and intelligent public servants who have proven themselves profoundly prescient on the biggest issues of our time based on what they were saying and doing then....as opposed to all of those who just caught up recently!

It ain't about having diversity either (and I'm Black), it's about competence. It ain't about just being better than Bush (cause yeah...that means we can all be Prez....cause that's how much his reign has devalued the office that was once reserved for the best and the brightest)......

And Thus far with who is running, I'm not as confident as you are that we've got what we need in the current primaries.

34. I think you're badly misunderestimating the American people,
or at least the progressive contingent represented here at DU. We aren't looking for superheroes to save us from ourselves. What we want--and desperately need!--is a president who will mobilize our BEST instincts, rather than actively thwarting them at every turn--when he isn't actively appealing to our worst instincts, or their worst instincts, even if not ours.

I am reading Earth in the Balance right now, having just finished An Inconvenient Truth. It's an urgent call to action, eloquent and convincing. What he's saying is that as far as the climate crisis is concerned, we are just plain out of time. We don't have the luxury of procrastination and denial any more. Nothing less than a global effort involving every one of us is going to save us.

That means demogogues, corporate cronies, climate deniers and just plain politics as usual are ALSO luxuries we can no longer afford. President Gore would have millions of willing allies who wouldn't even wait to be asked to do their part. But for the past six years, we've been forced to spend all our energies frantically trying to plug holes in the dike, so that something resembling America will still be left for the next president to lead. We would all have much preferred doing something constructive to save the earth.

20. Dobbs and his panel were discussing the debate tonight and the
candidates - and Dobbs himself said something like, "Well it would be nice to thin the field a little, but you can't forget about Al Gore being undeclared and General Clark."

I nearly fell off my chair!

27. It wasn't Dobbs saying their name...
It was the middle guy that is a consultant , when dobbs suggested they thin the candidates down. Then the guy said, that the possiblility of more candidates like Gore and Clark. Then he said he didn't think Gore was going to run. I re run the comment to make sure I heard it correct. I was surprized...WOW first time Clark mentioned as a possibility...

32. You want an ambitious person to be president.
The founding fathers obsessed about this question, since they formally renounced the centuries-old tradition of letting genetic accidents determine who your leader is. They decided that the best leader is someone who is ambitious and wants to seek fame. The trick to controlling such a person is (1) put them under the scrutiny of two other branches of government (on which point the Republicans have obviously failed miserably) and (2) make them accountable to the people on a regular basis--that way the only way to transfer fame into national office is to become famous for doing what's in the national interest.

Had we continued to follow the Founders' model for government, the Democrats would be nominating Phil Donohue and the Republicans would be nominating Jack Kevorkian.
