The FBI can blame themselves for the higher crime rate.
Not too long ago there was an article stating that white collar crime was being under-investigated because the priority was on terror. For those of us who are victims of on-going white collar crime in crooked, political municipalities, I can tell you, that I understand why people are snapping all over this country. I don't condone it, but I understand it.

This is what happens when you allow a segment of the population to abuse their neighbors because they have political connections. It sends the wrong message.

Violent crime on the rise in the US: FBI

Violent crime rose for the second year running in 2006 across the United States, in a worrying trend overturning more than a decade of successful crime-fighting efforts, the FBI reports.

The annual report released Monday by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) showed that violent crime -- murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault -- rose by 1.3 percent between January and December of 2006, after a 2.3 percent increase in 2005. Robberies were up a steep six percent.

However preliminary figures, compiled from law enforcement agencies across the country, found that property crimes -- including burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle thefts -- were down last year by 2.9 percent.

The crime data is compiled by law enforcement agencies across the United States, and then submitted to federal authorities for analysis.

1. I'm confused
Are you saying that people become violent because they're upset about corruption?

2. Resources are diverted from real crime investigations to
developing a counter to a nearly non-existant threat of terrorism. The reduced investigation of white collar crime was just the tip of the spear, quickly followed by reduced investigation of property crimes, fewer police on the streets, closed sub-stations, etc.

Here where I live we had, a few years ago, both mounted police and bicycle patrols downtown. Haven't seen a mounted cop in at least a couple years, and I spot a bike patrol maybe once a week. Never heard any discussion about the reduced presence. It just sorta happened. Haven't heard anything about local crime stats, but I can guess.

5. I understand that part,
but it didn't seem like the point of the OP.

8. I went from point A to point C.
I also think that maybe point "C" is something that isn't even looked at. I mean, how many divorces, suicides, robberies, embezzlements are the Wall Street crashes responsible for? Noone ever takes that into account.

3. I'm saying that people see crookedness go unpunished all the time.

And it sends the wrong message. My neighborhood is a very unhealthy neighborhood. A very small little community, and I can tell you that the number of households with domestic issues is pretty surprisingly high. And I have to believe it's because of the unhealthy community environment creating far more tension than is normal.

Under those circumstances, I can understand why people are snapping. Personally, I was raised with a foolproof method of avoiding all the negativism. Thank God I'm socially autistic.

6. This effect is especially heightened
where the police themselves are crooked.

7. Yeah, isn't that something!
It was just on the news. A deputy near here got caught for abusing his power and harrassed someone over a personal issue.

You just don't expect to see that kind of thing happen, but when it happens you say, sure, why should he be any different?
