Wyoming Sen. Thomas Dead at 74

<SNIP> WASHINGTON (AP) - Wyoming Sen. Craig Thomas, a three-term conservative Republican who stayed clear of the Washington limelight and political catfights, died Monday. He was 74.

The senator's family issued a statement saying he died Monday evening at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. He had been receiving chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Just before the 2006 election, Thomas was hospitalized with pneumonia and had to cancel his last campaign stops. He nonetheless won with 70 percent of the vote, monitoring the election from his hospital bed.

Two days after the election, Thomas announced that he had just been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, will appoint a successor from one of three finalists chosen by the state Republican party.

3. We mourn this loss with compassion, for we hope they will mourn for ours the same.
In this moment of tragedy, let us not resort to crude and cruel language about the Senator, his words and deeds will stand by themselves for the world to judge, we need not say a thing. Condolences to the family, may they and he find comfort somewhere.

9. Sen Thomas appeared to be no hateful Republican
Guess he had decent manners. So we wish the family peace. Wonder why tho the Dem. governor will appoint a republican. ? Not that in Wyo. , I don't understand. But in what other state would a republican governor follow suit in the death of a Democratic senator?

12. I think it's the law in Wyoming that the replacement candidates are picked by the incumbent party
The governor selects from a pool of three.

13. It is stated in the other thread that a change of parties is not allowed
so the new Senator must be a Republican by state law.

23. Hmm... We need to pass that law here in California!
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 10:34 PM by calipendence
Now is that only in the case of death or also if they resign to take a different office, like VP, etc. too. Perhaps we should pass a similar law here in California to free up Barbara Boxer for a VP slot!

26. LOL
I don't think anybody's planning on picking Barbara Boxer for VP.

I love her to death, but a 67 year old jewish liberal from San Francisco isn't going to be chosen as a VP candidate.

15. In Wyoming, the law is that
the Governor gets to appoint a replacement Senator from a list of 3 candidates provided by the state committee of whatever party the outgoing Senator was affiliated with.

35. If an independent dies, each party in the state has the opportunity to nominate one individual, and

any citizen who qualifies for the office can submit a petition with 100 names on it to have their name thrown in the ring as well. Then the governor picks from among all of those. There is a time frame for all of this--I think the governor has five days to make the request, then there is a fifteen-day window for all of the parties and individuals to submit, and then the governor has five (could be wrong on the last one) days to decide.

The time frame is shorter in this case, since there is only one party submitting. I think they will have five days to submit their list of three once the governor notifies them of their responsibility to do so. (I'm not positive about these numbers, though :))

20. So is Joe breathing a little easier then?...
Edited on Mon Jun-04-07 10:39 PM by calipendence
Don't mean to make light of his death though. It is fitting that they keep it the same party. I still remember the vultures gathering in South Dakota to see if that would give the Republicans a new senator. And he must have been ill at the same time that Craig was too, if this was since November. I wonder why we didn't hear about this one.

At least the Democratic Governor can eliminate 2/3rds of the selected candidates that he deems unacceptable, so that perhaps we might get a more moderate senator than we might otherwise get from an election there. Hard to say.

24. What if....
Freudenthal signs an Executive Order ignoring all 3 candidates, and selects a Democratic Senator from Wyoming?

That would be a coup! (And finally able to IGNORE JoeLiarman)
