SPIKE LEE TO FILM FOLLOW UP TO KATRINA DOC: Director says ‘The story is not over.’
(June 5, 2007)

*While accepting a Peabody award Monday for directing the HBO documentary "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts," Spike Lee said he will shoot another film to follow up the first round of stories regarding the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.

"The story is not over," he told the Associated Press backstage. "It's still something that's evolving and we want to keep on top of it."

Lee isn’t sure when he would return to New Orleans with film cameras, but now is too soon, he said.

Lee and his team were one of 35 winners of the 66th Annual Peabody Awards, given for excellence in electronic media. They included cable and network entertainment shows, as well as local and network news programs.

Onstage, he told the crowd that he befriended many of the people featured in the film.

"Most of them are still up the creek without a paddle, abandoned by their local, state and federal governments," he said. "We can't forget about them."

1. This is the magnum opus of Spike Lee's career
I defy anyone to watch "When the Levees Broke" and not find yourself stunned at the scope of the disaster and very affected by the stories told by those who live in New Orleans and on the Gulf Coast.

I don't know about anyone else, but when we initially saw it, I couldn't sleep all night, up pacing, and wondering how those in our government could turn their backs on such devastation and human suffering.
