Southern Baptists present religious liberty award to Bush

Southern Baptists present religious liberty award to Bush
By ROSE FRENCH
Associated Press Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Southern Baptists, who have long been among the most vocal Christian groups supporting the Bush administration, have given the president an award for advocating religious freedom.

Richard Land, who heads the lobbying arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, presented the 2006 John Leland Religious Liberty Award to Bush in the Oval Office on Monday for “courageously defending the right of all people to exercise freely their religious faith,” according to the framed citation.

“I can’t think of another president in my lifetime who has done more to promote religious liberty specifically as a fundamental human right around the world than Bush,” Land told the Baptist Press.

Previous recipients of the award have included Republican U.S. senators Sam Brownback of Kansas and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania; and Republican congressmen Charles Canady from Florida and Frank Wolf of Virginia.

5. uh....wouldn't it make more sense for the Southern Baptists to
present a 'religious freedom award' to say, oh....a Muslim, Jew, or Taoist?

What sense does it make to present an award to someone who ONLY espouse's YOUR view? That's a "merit badge".

The Southern Baptists (and their stoopid awards) will be flung upon the dung heaps of history. :boring:

7. To these guys, religious liberty is only for fundie Christians.
To the extent any other religious group asks that its beliefs and symbols be respected, this is seen as infringing on the religious liberty of Christians.

8. Well I'm officially in Bizarro Land. I guess "religious liberty" means "government
endorsement of Protestants (specifically, Southern Baptists crazies) in violation of the Establishment Clause of the Ist Amendment"...

9. I think they have their terms mixed up
"religious liberty" doesn't mean converting everyone to Christianity, Southern Baptists specifically.
