Turkish officials: Troops enter Iraq
ANKARA, Turkey - Hundreds of Turkish troops crossed into northern Iraq early Wednesday to chase Kurdish guerrillas who attack Turkey from bases there, Turkish security officials said. One official said the troops had returned to their bases by the end of the day, but Turkey's foreign minister denied they had ever entered Iraq.

Iraq militants, al-Qaeda reach ceasefire
A rival Islamic militant group says it has reached a ceasefire with al-Qaeda in Iraq. The conflict between the Islamic Army in Iraq and al-Qaeda in Iraq had intensified in recent months. "This agreement is based on a ceasefire between the two parties that bans all armed acts and all other activities that could cause attrition," Ibrahim al-Shimmari, spokesman for the Islamic Army in Iraq, told Al-Jazeera television. "The armistice started at dawn Wednesday."

Iraqi Lawmakers Pass Resolution That May Force End to Occupation
While Washington lawmakers play procedural games with an out-of-control executive branch, Iraqi legislators are working to bring an end to the occupation of their country.

Egypt takes swipe at Bush over democracy remarks
CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt has dismissed as "unacceptable" U.S. President George W. Bush's call for the release of jailed opposition leader Ayman Nour, saying it was an internal issue that Washington should stay away from.

'Everybody speaks English, right?' Bush asks Merkel
Heilgendamm, June 6 (DPA) US President George W. Bush Wednesday expressed surprise at the need for a German translation of his comments to the press at the G8 summit at Heiligendamm. 'Everybody speaks English, right?' Bush asked, after a German interpreter began to translate his brief statement to the press following talks with G8 summit host German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The Nation
GOP: Bush should adopt bipartisan plan
WASHINGTON - Several Republican senators Tuesday called for President Bush to implement a new war strategy based on recommendations by the Iraq Study Group, which advocated winding down the U.S. combat mission.

Ethics Panel to Investigate Congressman on Conduct
WASHINGTON, June 5 — Under pressure from Republicans, the House ethics committee announced Tuesday it would open an inquiry into the conduct of Representative William J. Jefferson, who relinquished his sole committee assignment in the wake of his indictment on corruption charges… Democrats countered with a proposal that would require the ethics committee to automatically investigate any lawmaker under indictment or report within 30 days why it had chosen not to. Both proposals were approved overwhelmingly by the House… Democrats described the proposal by the Republicans as hypocrisy, noting that they had declined last year to seek the ouster of their own indicted former leader, Representative Tom DeLay of Texas. And former Representative Bob Ney of Ohio was allowed to remain in office after admitting misconduct that led to his incarceration.

Libby's supporters renew call for pardon
WASHINGTON - I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's allies urged President Bush on Wednesday to pardon the former White House aide, but Bush rebuffed questions about whether he would intervene to prevent Libby's 2 1/2-year prison sentence.

Stephanie Miller, The Stand Up Comic of Progressive Talk Radio
A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW: We interviewed Stephanie shortly after her three-day stint on MSNBC, during Imus's former time slot. Miller is a rising star, just on the heels of Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes and Ed Schultz for the top tier of listenership for progressive talk show hosts.

The Black Caucus’ Fatal FOX News Embrace
Congressional Black Caucus leadership insists on continuing its indecent dance with FOX News despite public and internal opposition to a joint CBC-FOX Democratic presidential debate. With only three candidates now willing to participate, it is doubtful the accursed event will occur as planned, in September. However, the Caucus' willingness to partner with Rupert Murdoch's racist propaganda machine reveals a deep corruption among the Black misleadership class. If they are willing to tango with FOX News, they'll have illicit relations with anybody.

Fox News' African-American elected official mix-up not its first
On The Live Desk, Fox News showed footage of Rep. John Conyers while Brian Wilson reported on the expected indictment of Rep. William Jefferson. This is not the first time Fox News has shown footage of one African-American elected official while discussing another -- in the previous case, airing footage of Harold Ford Jr. while talking about Sen. Barack Obama.

A Failed Experiment
On January 20, 1981, in his first inaugural address, Ronald Reagan told the nation: "Government is not a solution to our problem, government is the problem." Thus began a grand experiment… Twenty-six years later, what do we have? A dismantled and “outsourced” industrial base, an impoverished work force, a nine trillion dollar debt burden upon future generations, and a degradation of education and scientific research, and a captive media that deprives the public of essential news as it issues outright lies.

Washington Post Goes Stark Raving Mad in Attacking Social Security
According to an article in (Tuesday)'s paper, the country faces a severe budget crisis: "At the heart of the debate is a reality inescapable for either side: Even without the war, spiraling health-care and Social Security costs have stressed the nation's finances to the breaking point." A statement like this just leaves a reader wondering, what on earth are they talking about? The unifed budget deficit is projected to be 1.3 percent of GDP in 2007 and 0.7 percent in 2008. One can argue that this is too high, but "stressed the nation's finances to the breaking point"? Give me a break, the deficit was larger as a share of GDP in almost every year from the late sixties to the late nineties. And what does Social Security have to do with this?

Origins of Human Nervous System Found in Sponges
That natural bath sponge you use to scrub-a-dub-dub your body might not have a nervous system, but its cells possess many of the genes needed to make one. The surprising discovery, detailed in June 6 issue of the open-access journal PLoS ONE, suggests the evolutionary origins of the nervous system are much older than scientists previously thought.

Adults Brains Still Make Youthful Cells
The brains of adult mammals are slowly, constantly churning out new brain cells. Previously scientists assumed the fresh neurons acted simply as replacements for old and dying cells. But recent research suggests that these new adult neurons may help old cells adapt to new experiences and could someday be used to rejuvenate aging brains.
