Book crowd begs Gore to enter presidential fray
But former Vice President says he'll sit it out

June 7, 2007
BY TERESA SEWELL Staff Reporter/tsewell@suntimes.com

Al Gore lovers nearly turned his Borders book signing appearance into a political rally Wednesday afternoon.

"Run Al, Run!" many chanted as Gore headed to his seat at the State Street store. But, disappointing hundreds in the crowd, he reiterated that he would not enter the 2008 presidential race.

"I think he was the legitimate president in 2000. So, it's only fitting that he occupy a seat in the White House," said Northsider Tahra Workman, who picked up the youth book version of Gore's documentary film An Inconvenient Truth for her daughter.

Borders employees handed out all 1,000 wristbands -- the maximum number of books allowed for the signing of Gore's other new book, The Assault on Reason -- 45 minutes before he even arrived.

"I've really poured myself into this book," Gore said as the crowd cheered.

Committed to the Earth
The former vice president explained The Assault on Reason takes a look at the "cracks in our democracy," questioning why the Earth's atmosphere is polluted daily "as if it was an open sewer," and how fear has clouded America's political vision.

2. Reading Al's AOR....it becomes evident America lost OUT BY NOT HAVING HIM AS PRESIDENT
The Difference in intellect is so apparent...like lumps of black coal on white snow.

Listen to Bush speak off the cuff and ya jus know he ain't gonna write a book...not like Al's anyway.

Al has a Brain

W has None

3. It's great that Al's fans like him and want him to run.
The real test would be for Gore to show up at a P.J. O'Rourke book signing and test the reaction.

If he can get a positive response from a crowd of cynical but well-read conservatives, then he has a chance.

4. Do you hold our declared candidtes to that standard?

I doubt if any of them would get a good reception.

7. What standard?
Edited on Thu Jun-07-07 08:28 AM by Buzz Clik
My point was really simple and easily comprehensible to those without prickly skin: Getting excited about the pleadings of a group of people who were at a book signing for the sole purpose of buying Gore's book isn't exactly a strong test. It doesn't even register on the world's "What Was That?" meter.

As far as the other candidates go, no more than four of them would get better than a polite round of golf applause at their own book signing.

13. This is just one of hundreds of such posts we've had since the
all-too-early start of the primary season.

There was a breathless one the other day informing us that Obama had attracted 3,500 people to a rally in Seattle. Yeah, liberal Seattle with a metropolitan population of over three MILLION people. Wow!

And I don't mean to single out Obama. We're getting such threads from supporters of all our candidates.

It's going to be a long, long primary season.

5. wouldn't it be funny (not ha ha funny)
if in the end our choices for president were Freddy boy and Al. The only two not in the race as of yet. I wonder who they would pick for their VP.

Al wouldn't pick Hillary too much bad history, I think. I be Al would pick Obama and Fred would pick Romney.

8. No, no. You're missing their way of thinking:
Al would pick Fred for his VP and Fred would pick Al -- that way, they're in no matter what.

6. I was there yesterday.
I may have been distracted, but didn't hear him say he wasn't running. People started chanting after he spoke, and he was quiet. I was stuck behind a bookcase, and couldn't see him to gauge his reaction. I think he sat down and began signing books at that point.

So you were there and didn't hear him refuse to run? Or
just couldn't see/hear him?

11. I snuck around the corner of a bookshelf (out of line)
to see him give a five minute speech. I had to stand on my toes to see him just from the nose up. When he finished his speech I returned to the other side of the shelf where my husband was in line. The crowd closed behind me. A group started chanting, just for about 10 seconds. There was no audible response from Al Gore.
