Bush's handlers are dumber than we thought

The Hot Pictures on DU right now depict Fearless Leader drinking something that looks a hell of a lot like a beer.

Considering that Bush's public persona is that of someone who defeated the Scourge of Alcoholism through the Strength of Jesus and the Love of His Wife, why in FUCK would his watchers even think about letting him drink anything but mineral water?

Our opinion doesn't matter in the least to that crew.

Personally, he was drinking and he got a hangover from the German beer which I hear is stronger than what we have here. (never been there so don't know)

A lot of people think the 18th Amendment banned alcoholic beverages. It didn't. It banned "intoxicating liquors." The definition of "intoxicating liquors" was not written into the Constitution.

The Volstead Act of 1919 writ the ban on alcohol into law, by defining "intoxicating" as containing more than one-half of one percent alcohol. If you've seen "The Untouchables" you will remember that Eliot Ness arrested people for violations of the Volstead Act.

Incidentally, the Volstead Act fucked the "drys" more than you think. It turns out that the Carrie Nations and Womens Christian Temperance Union people sold the 18th Amendment as only banning distilled spirits--so a lot of people who weren't really drys signed onto it, thinking they'd still be able to get beer. Then the Volstead shit came in and banned all alcohol.

What really ended Prohibition wasn't the 21st Amendment, it was the Cullen-Harrison Act, which amended the Volstead Act to read "not more than 3.2 percent alcohol."

Anyway, that's why beer was 3.2 percent for quite some time, and "malt liquor" was stronger. And for many years, it was illegal to list a beer's alcoholic content on the label.

In Germany, OTOH, any liquid which met the German Beer Purity Law could be labeled beer no matter the alcohol content, which means that if you decided you wanted to make beer strong enough to use as motor fuel you could.

As in drink occasionally or socially or responsibly? I think the idea that it's an either or thing is just one (AA) school of thought and not necessarily true(?)

That is differentiated from alcoholism.

A friend stopped drinking because he didn't like that he needed a drink every evening even if it was only one. He has resumed drinking but I don't think it's at anything but moderate levels. Probably not every night.
