Associated Press Writer

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Charlie Crist said Thursday he wants to spend $32 million to get rid of touch-screen voting technology adopted after the 2000 presidential election, and proposed a system that would create a paper trail of votes instead.

The proposal, which still needs legislative approval, aims to have all counties producing paper trails by the 2008 presidential election.

"What we're talking about here is democracy and it is precious," Crist told a crowd of several hundred people at a gathering of the nonpartisan Voters Coalition of Palm Beach County. "You should, when you go vote, be able to have a record of it."

1. Charlie Crist is a giant ? to me
We voted against him in November of course, but that wasn't because of anything more than he is a Republican. However, since taking office, he almost seems to be the anti-Jeb. He hasn't done enough to stem the outrageous homeowners insurance rates, but he has done SOMETHING, and he did it right away. Now this thing with the voting machines. I'm cautious, but he may not be so bad after all, Repub or no.

4. I voted for Jim Davis . . .
But have been impressed with Crist so far. I think this move of getting a paper trail is an excellent one.

He wants to be the governor of all and not just the Repugs. Let's hope it continues!

Crist is doing things that IMHO Davis would have never done.

6. True, plus the legislature would have sunk most initiatives
from Davis.

There should be a few more Crist Republicans in that party...
