Has anyone seen My Country, My Country? (Oscar Nom'd documentary)
In My Country, My Country there's a scene where, I think, you hear an Iraqi news program in the background (which is translated to English in the subtitles) and the commentator says that people in Iraq and the region are worried that the US will succeed with the January '05 elections and in bringing democracy to Iraq because that will give the pro-war neoconservatives justification for invading other countries.

There's also a scene where a guy's son is kidnapped and ransomed and he goes to his friend's house. He tries to call the kidnappers but he's so upset he thinks his phone isn't working and he starts explaining to his friend while someone else looks at the phone. He talks about how, because his neighborhood was blockaded by US soldiers, the only way he could get past the roadblocks was to explain to the soldiers that he needed to get money to pay a ransom -- he says the soldiers were very sympathetic and wrote down an incident report and notified other US soldiers so that he could get out. The guy picks up his phone to dial and it turns out that it was on the entire time and the kidnappers heard everything they said.

The guy is then sure that the kidnappers will kill him and his son.

It was sickening to watch as an American -- how many of us have made a mistake like that -- you think that the phone isn't on but it is and someone hears something you wish they hadn't. But are the consequences for you the death of your child? We've created a situation -- even though we think we're helping -- where the consequences of small mistakes are death.
