Binge eating
NBC news reported last night that there is an epidemic of binge eating in this country. Binge eating is defined as consuming 1500 or more calories at a sitting.

Guess what?

Big Mac + large fries + large Coke = 1420 calories

Can I supersize that for you?

1. And, from some evidence, high fructose corn syrup and trans fats
mask appetite control indicators, so you don't feel full. In essence, you become addicted to food.

People are starting to wake up about the trans fat thing (though in some cases trying to replace it with yet more GM food) but what about high fructose corn syrup? Yesterday I found out that it's even in Campbell's Tomato Soup!

6. Try finding spaghetti sauce without corn syrup!
Corn syrup must be the foundation of the traditional Mediterranean diet! Seriously, check out the organic section to get away from trans fats and corn syrup. You still have to read labels though; some organic brands of tomato sauce add cane sugar!

11. I found one brand which I can't remember the name - haven't eaten pasta in a while
But it's in a can, not a glass jar. Hunt's maybe? I'm just glad they've started to come out with multi-grain pastas that don't taste like cardboard. It's not easy eating healthy, period. There is so much over-processed crap, and what is healthy is either expensive or tastes awful.

12. well, sugar in some form is necessary to cut the acidity of the tomato bases....
my mother made fantastic sauce from scratch, and a tablespoon of sugar or so would go in if she had to use canned tomatoes instead of fresh, just to cut teh acidity. HFCS is evil, no doubt, but a couple of T's of unrefined cane sugar in a jar of sauce is not going to fry your glycemic index :)

29. Did you know that you can make your own?
Without corn syrup! It's actually quite easy and quick to make a vegetarian spaghetti sauce. I have never, ever had jar sauce in my house. Although I admit to using a pinch of sugar to cut the acidity of the tomatoes. PM me for recipe!

16. I found HFCS in hummus recently.
Freaking hummus. It's supposed to be made with chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice and garlic.

Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 03:52 PM by Jeanette in FL
I have rarely ever bought it already made and would never had thought in a million years that HFCS would be in hummus. I make my own. I can't even figure out why they would want it to be sweet tasting. That is unreal.

They do put that crap in everything processed.

22. It wasn't sweet tasting, so it must have not had much.
It tasted like hummus without any sugar added, but it was just fucking nuts. I forget the brand name, but I bought it at the A&P. Normally, I don't make my own hummus, but I'll get either the Whole Foods brand or the all-natural deli by me has fresh homemade hummus daily.

I'm certainly not buying that brand again.

Sometimes making light of something is the only way to cope. Forgive me for mocking myself.

4. But if you change it to a Diet Coke, it cancels it out, right? Seriously, I think there's a lot of
anxiety among us right now. Prolonged and impending war, a gov't gone wrong, would drive any one to drink or overeat.

5. That still cracks me up
I was a fast food manager for 24 years. I can't tell you how often someone would come in and order everything in super humongous with a diet coke.

15. Maybe some of them were diabetic?
I'm not diabetic but often when I order fast food I order a diet drink, mostly because when I indulge I'm much more interested in getting a little fast food fix than in the drink. Just because I indulge from time to time doesn't mean I have to go ALL out. A regular soda has a LOT of calories and a ton of sugar. It doesn't "cancel it out," but at least it doesn't make it worse. But it always does sound kind of funny when I order. :)

calories - he just thinks it taste better.

Although, that is funny.

28. LOL. I'm a true believer in Diet Drinks, but the trick is-you have to be slim
to get away with it without getting the 'weird' eye. Yes, one's choice of drink makes a MAJOR difference. If I were to start drinking sodas and regular juices again that would be an instant 20+ pounds added to my weight.

Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 04:39 PM by SoCalDem
(with a coke being a SIX OUNCE bottle flavored with SUGAR), to being a "constant companion"..

a Super Big Gulp apparently has SIXTY-FOUR ounces (I have never had or seen one up close, but that's what an article I read, said)

9. 1420 calories?
That's just under the "binge wire". So I guess you could essentially eat three of these a day (at each "sitting") and be alright. Cary on...

10. At first I thought it was 14200 calories...
which would be a real binge. Now I see it's 1420, which is ridiculous. It's far more than my intake for an entire day, but it certainly isn't a binge.

17. Ever notice the massive serving sizes at restaurants?
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 03:40 PM by djohnson
Maybe it's just around here, but a typical restaurant has serving sizes that seem like they could feed 4 people. They are all trying to out-do one another I guess. I'd be nice if they were smaller and less expensive.

Edit: Of course I'm talking about actual restaurants with real food and not that synthetic stuff they sell at McDonald's.

I don't need enough pasta for five and I also don't wanna pay $10 just for myself.

But I would if a nice healthy restaurant came along...

23. People need to wake up to the fact hat they're paying someone to do
the cooking and the clean-up; not to mention the lights and heat. Don't expect restaurant food to cost the same as the food you buy at the grocery and haul home to cook yourself!

24. Giant sizes!
My daughter and I love General Gao's chicken from our local Chinese restaurant.

We ask for ONE order of the GG's --- and it is good for TWO dinners for two and ONE lunch for two.

I can't imagine anyone polishing off that one huge order by themselves.
