is climate change so scary it stops contemplation?

I've noticed that the mere mention of any climate change event has a noticable effect on people. the eyes glaze and you can hear the doors clanging shut in their brains.

or do people become mute bacause there really isn't a way to stop it without a huge change in the way humans live? since that isn't going to happen there is no reason to even comment on events?

should we just stop thinking about it and enjoy each day until climate change visits our neighborhoods and we have to deal with it.

or until the price of food and water leaves our budget behind? or, or, or

The sheer magnitude of the issue is hard to grasp, and I think many people just would rather not worry about it.

It's like trying to comprehend a universe that never ends... you can almost hear the grey-matter cogs and wheels stuttering.

My SO's father was yelling at the TV during a spot on global warming "those damn scientists don't know anything!" :eyes:

Lord, some days...

Who cannot bring themselves to think that their precious children are in harm's way for no good reason, so they support W because he certainly MUST know better than we do.

Thinking for oneself involves taking some responsibility.

when their roofs flew off and they we left in a heap of rubble. Then see how bored people are of the subject.

have. The overwhelming repercussions of the damage behind our "ignorance" (read as allowing such devastation to occur) is too painful. Much easier to discount the messenger.

for a number of life's issues. They most likely will do the same about this. They can't deal with it. Many live in denial. I was brought up in a family of denial. They still are. Everything is just fine if you don't think or talk about it. It being.. anything that isn't fine.

It's mind blowing how they turn off to it. I know it resides in them, it comes out in other ways... mis directed anger, horrible relationships, even prejudice. They are so shallow, won't go any further than the surface.

Then when something happens, they are "surprised"...

Clueless, and they prefer it that way. It's much more comfortable to "not deal". Selfish too.

She's more concerned with terrorism than no longer being able to survive on planet earth. Amazing. I also think that most people believe that SOMEONE ELSE will deal with it. If you suggest switching to florescent bulbs, energy star appliances, solar, hybrid cars, or (heaven forbid) swearing off beef you are suddenly faced with a foaming at the mouth libertarian who fumes about PERSONAL FREEDOM. Burgers, incandescent bulbs and SUVs are more important than survival? When will the human race simply grow up and understand the concepts of personal responsibility and cause and effect?
