G.I.s' Guide to Iraq (1943)

G.I.s' Guide to Iraq (1943)

By Noah Shachtman

In 1943, some American troops were stationed in Iraq. Here is a PDF of a War Department handbook introducing them to the country ('i-RAHK"), and providing some do's and don'ts when interacting with the Iraqi people. Some highlights:

- NEVER discuss religion or politics or women with Moslems.

- Don't stare at anyone. Remember the fear of the "evil eye".

- Knock before entering a private house. If a woman answers, wait until she has had time to retire.

- If you see grown men walking hand in hand, ignore it. They are not queer.

- You can usually tell a mosque by its high tower. Keep away from mosques. (Emphasis in the original) If you try to enter one, you will be thrown out, probably with a severe beating.

- There are four towns in Iraq which are particularly sacred to the Iraq Moslems: Kerbala, Najaf, samarra, and Kadhiman. Unless you are ordered to these towns it is advisable to stay away from them.

- Moslems here are divided into two factions something like our division into Catholic and Protestant denominations -- so don't put in your two cents when Iraqis argue about religion.

- There are also political differences in Iraq that have puzzled diplomats and statesmen. You won't help matters any by getting mixed up in them.

And then there's this:

- American success or failure in Iraq may well depend on whether the Iraqis (as the people are called) like American soldiers or not. It may not be quite that simple. But then again it could.

The PDF of the original 1943 War and Navy Department document, "A Short Guide to Iraq", is a good read.

2. It's too bad Bush didn't read this before invading
Idiot-in-chief didn't even know there were two sects of Islam until after the fact.

3. My father had a handbook for US soldiers going to Occupied Germany...
...and IIRC another for Occupied Japan. I'm not sure what he was doing with them as he was posted to Gila Bend, Arizona during WW II, but those handbooks made for interesting reading. They provided a snapshot of US intentions and expectations about our military's behavior, and gave a simplified but important overview of an alien culture and customs. There were everyday phrases, clues to polite behavior, general do's and don'ts.

When I read them as a kid I remember feeling proud of our government for having this kind of forethought.

After Bush invaded Afghanistan and Iraq reports of various self-inflicted disasters seemed to indicate that no such forethought had gone into the occupation of these countries. Our troops seemed to be lost in these alien cultures, as ill-equipped to deal with the culture as they were ill-equipped in personal armor.... A perfect Neocon FUBAR. :banghead:

5. I guess if one was born before the 50's they did not know this
The uSA is always right and the most right seems to be Bush. Just turn on the hearing and hear these GOP people. They are right about every thing. I guess that at the time of WW2 we felt we could still learn some thing from others. What Waxman needs is a 2 by 4 to sort of get to the head of these people.
