MARGA KELLOGG
Staff Writer

OCEANSIDE ----

In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.,
Vietnam veteran Dana Rickard began flying his flag upside down, a move which he
said caused him to be harassed by some people.

Rickard said flying the flag upside down is a standard military distress signal
and was never intended to be disrepectful.

"It means we need some help here. That's American heritage, it has nothing to do
with saying anything bad about the flag," said Rickard, an Oceanside resident.

The United States Flag Code supports Richard's statement.

The code formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect
to the flag and includes the following:

# The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing.
It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.

# The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a speakers desk, draping
a platform, or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes
is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.

# The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered,
printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes,
or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use.
Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.

# The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag
patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of
patriotic organizations.

# The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter,
word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.

# The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying,
or delivering anything.

1. She was a grand ol' Flag
I remember some of her glory days, when she was placed on the surface of the moon. Of course before that there was the glory she achieved saving the world from tyrants in WWI and WWII.
But those days are but mere history now, the Flag must endure the wrath of a Tyrant who is wrapped his regime in her and proclaimed that anyone against him is a terrorist.
We pray there will be brighter days ahead for old glory and that she is stained any more than that which she has seen in the last several years.

2. U.S. Army Celebrates 232nd Birthday and Flag Day
U.S. Army Celebrates 232nd Birthday and Flag Day

http://www.rismedia.com/wp/2007-06-13/us-army-celebrates-232nd-birthday-and-flag-day/

RISMEDIA, June 14, 2007-

The U.S. Army celebrates its 232nd birthday today, June 14 with commemorative activities including
ceremonial first pitches, parachute jumps, Future Soldier swearing-in ceremonies and Army Soldiers
performing the national anthem at 19 sporting events across the country. A complete list of venues
can be found on the Army Birthday Fact Sheet attached to this release.

The U.S. Army Parachute Team "Golden Knights" will help commemorate the birthday celebration by
jumping into Baltimore's Camden Yards and Cincinnati's Great American Ballpark during pre-game
ceremonies.

During 13 of the scheduled sporting events, several hundred new Soldiers will give their oath of
enlistment during pre-game, on-field ceremonies at ballparks and stadiums. Birthday cake-cutting
ceremonies at home plate will also take place in several ballparks.

In Baltimore, Gen. Richard A. Cody, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, will administer the Oath of
Enlistment to new recruits, and participate in a cake-cutting ceremony. The cake is tentatively
scheduled to be made by the "Ace of Cakes", the Baltimore-based bakery featured on a television show
which airs on the Food Network.

At all 11 Major League Baseball games, local Soldiers who are Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation
Enduring Freedom veterans will be participating in the ceremonial "first pitch." In Miami, Staff Sgt.
Tony Culberson, who was awarded a Bronze Star with Valor and a Purple Heart while serving in Operation
Iraqi Freedom will be throwing out the game's ceremonial first pitch.

In Cincinnati, Reds Chief Operating Officer John Allen will be honored in a commendation ceremony
during the Reds-Angels game. Allen, who is an Army veteran, will join Col. Donald A. Bartholomew,
a Cincinnati native, for a cake-cutting ceremony. Col. Bartholomew will throw the game's ceremonial
first pitch, with Maj. Gen. Thomas Bostick administering the Oath of Enlistment to new recruits.

"The Army's 232nd Birthday is a time to reflect on the service and sacrifice our Soldiers and their
families have made in winning and protecting America's freedom," said Col. Thomas E. Nickerson,
Director, G7/9 (Strategic Communication, Outreach and Marketing Directorate), U.S. Army Accessions
Command.

"U.S. Army Soldiers are mentally, emotionally, and physically strong. They consistently take pride
in making a difference for themselves, their families, their communities, and their nation. As we
celebrate the Army's birthday, we also remember our Soldiers, past and present, and honor them for
their service to our Nation."

These birthday activities are in conjunction with the Army's Patriot Season, which honors America's
soldiers — past, present and future - and their families. Patriot Season runs from Armed Forces Day
(May 15) through Independence Day (July 4). Patriot Season also provides opportunities for Army
prospects to interact with Soldiers and hear their stories and dedication to protecting our country.

As June 14 also marks the anniversary of the creation of the U.S. flag, the U.S. Army invites
the nation to honor America's Soldiers and the American flag they proudly defend.

The American flag was created in 1777 by Betsy Ross, a seamstress from Philadelphia, two years
following the formation of this country's Army. Although a coincidence that these two symbols of
America share an anniversary, Flag Day serves as a reminder to honor the U.S. Army's dedication
to ensure freedom's light shines as a beacon throughout the world.

6. I have a deep respect for the National Colors, not so much for
what it is seen as now under the current administration, but rather for the hopes and dreams it represents. In another thread I wrote the following:

<snip>

"...It has to do w/many things, but I stand basically because of the pride I have in my country; not blind, moronic go w/the flow pride, but true pride. I've been around much of this world, mostly while in the service, and I've seen here, as well as other places, where people have in situations where their conditions could be infinitely better if they took hold of the processes that make up their country, and none have compared to this one, regardless of faults or the current direction this nation has taken.

For those of us who have been through several changes over the lifetimes we've had, we can see where some things have gone right. The Civil Rights movement, a move toward equality, a (somewhat lost) love of peace. There are so many things in this nation that are good, but get overlooked because of the negative aspects, that it is difficult for me not to stand when the NA is played. I look tot he future, on how this nation will become stronger in its resolve to grant Rights and Privileges to those who have been denied them for so long. I see much of the genius that gave a start to this nation, and I have unbridled respect for the Constitution. All things considered, I think that standing up for the NA is a small price to pay for I believe is the the greatest hope for civility and decency to persevere in a world that is cold and often unfair.

<snip>

What I do not stand up for is blind 'patriotism' that gets people into waters they should avoid at all costs. I have been to 4th of July parades here in my small city, where people sit proudly on flag festooned chairs, that remarkable look like flags, drinking copious amounts of beer from flag motif-ed paper cups and eating off of flag motif-ed paper plates. They wipe their greasy hands on napkins printed to look like flags, and then toss them into the street like it was nothing but another day at the slop-house. Maybe I'm a little off on this, but I find people like that appalling. They do not rise from their chairs when the Colors pass, but sit there and fart in what is essentially a symbol of our nation, while some old Vets march by that fought under that flag and try desperately to remember why they are doing this for people who simply claim the status of 'patriot', and yet will not even sacrifice a small amount of energy to stand before the Colors and just show a little respect."

<snip>

I am willing to bet that the majority of people across this nation do not know it is Flag Day, and the vast majority just don't care anyway, as it is not a holiday they can take off...

As for flying the flag up-side-down that is every Americans right, if they find themselves in distress.

But it's all over my local news today.

I have my flag flying here at home, from the porch overhang...

and it's upside down.

hang one out.

230 years ago, Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national colors...pretty good history there, it is sad that the Colors have become a symbol of fear and despotism, rather than a symbol of hope and Liberty as it was seen before bush came into power...:(

Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 12:32 PM by rasputin1952
asininity, and a lot of the GOP types around here are precisely the ones who disparage the flag while screaming for "desecration laws". It is incredible and hard to believe what I've seen from these jerks, the short list:

1. a guy who produces dumpsters that have each side adorned w/a painted US Flag.

2. Hundreds of flags on used car lots that blow off in the somewhat steady wind we have here.

3. A town near here that has flags painted on the sidewalk where people step all over them.

4. A manure wagon I saw w/a flag painted on the side, filled w/cow shit to the point of splattering on said flag.

5. Flag painted cars and p/u trucks.

6. Flag motif-ed plates, napkins, cups, plastic ware, all tossed into the street or tossed out on the grass at parks.

7. My congressman, Fortenberry (R-1st District) showed up w/2 aides wearing flag ties.

8. Flags, made in China used for Vet graves on holidays.

9. For sale in Wal-Mart, a flag decorated poop-scoop. (There was one left on the hook).

There are just so many things wrong with this that I can't even start to say what I think...but, if it were up to me...I'd just kick all of their asses...

21. Truth is stranger than fiction...I saw it w/my own two peepers
about 3 miles outside of Norfolk NE...It was on a cattle "ranch", right by the road, moving off to dump the maure in a huge pile, and then going back to get reloaded...It broke my heart, to be honest w/you...

This pinhead thought he was being patriotic, I guess, but all I could see was Our Flag being filled w/shit, and great gobs of it was all across the side...:(

FWIW, the Sheriff's office said it was despicable, but since it was private property, and privately owned, they couldn't even approach the guy about it on an official basis. I figure everyone has the Right of Free Speech, but if this guy saw someone burning a flag, he'd be most likely calling for a head...but to use the shitwagon approach was a bit too much for even me.

14. I have not flown the flag since 2001
I flew it a few time after 9/11, I think the last time I had it on display was Veterans day 2001.
After the right wing used it for propaganda, I refused to put it out and be part of their instrument.

Edited on Fri Jun-15-07 07:06 PM by rasputin1952
not the pass slowly or quickly is a matter that is often not w/in our grasp, but pass they must.

I was hoping for some kind of epiphany over all that has happened to me recently, but alas, no epiphany was forthcoming, drat. I have however, become much more vocal in how I see things, an because of that, some members here have decided to put me on ignore because I won't toe their line to their liking. Kind of funny really, so many "single issue" posters that cannot see the that all things are not B&W, but rather multicolored and far more complex than we'd like...:)

Out here, we have just acquired another kitten, a little all black one that has yet to be named. And I never knew that Guinea Pigs screamed for no reason at all. The dog leaped out of the car yesterday on my son's g/f chasing another car, but she is fine except for some minor scrapes and bruises. By all accounts, she should be dead, but I think she learned her lesson. The vet gave her a shot, and little morphine laced doggie biscuit types things. She sleeps and dreams welll...:D

Nebraska still sucks, and as soon as school is over and I get this licensing crap out of the way, I'm heading back East to work and to live...maybe PA. MD or NY. I've decided to work in a VA hospital, not sure which one, but my fellow vets need some quality care, and I've always been there for them, no sense in changing that now...
