Rules for the non military
In case you weren't aware of the rules, they are detailed below and were pulled from an email I received. So, we get our asses kicked for using the rights they fought to get us? I know it's BS but I thought I'd make sure you all know how to act

Rules for the Non Military

Dear Civilians, 'We know that the current state of affairs in our great nation has many civilians up in arms and excited to join the military. For those of you who can't join, you can still lend a hand. Here are a few of the areas where we would like your assistance:

1. The next time you see an adult talking (or wearing a hat) during the playing of the National Anthem---kick their ass.

2. When you witness, firsthand, someone burning the American Flag in protest---kick their ass.

3. Regardless of the rank they held while they served, pay the highest amount of respect to all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise, quietly pull them aside and explain how these veterans fought for the very freedom they bask in every second. Enlighten them on the many sacrifices these veterans made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down while a disabled veteran kicks their ass.

4. (GUYS) If you were never in the military, DO NOT pretend that you were. Wearing battle dress uniforms (BDUs) or Jungle Fatigues, tell ing others that you used to be 'Special Forces,' and collecting GI Joe memorabilia, might have been okay when you were seven years old. Now, it will only make you look stupid and get your ass kicked.

5. Next time you come across an Air Force member, do not ask them, 'Do you fly a jet?' Not everyone in the Air Force is a pilot. Such ignorance deserves an ass-kicking (childre n are exempt).

6. If you witness someone calling the US Coast Guard 'non-military', inform them of their mistake---and kick their ass.

7. Next time Old Glory (the US flag) prances by during a parade, get on your damn feet and pay homage to her by placing your hand over your heart. Quietly thank the military member or veteran lucky enough to be carrying her---of course, failure to do either of those could earn you a severe ass-kicking.

8. Don't try to discuss politics with a military member or a veteran. We are Americans, and we all bleed the same, regardless of our party affiliation. Our Chain of Command is to include our Commander-In-Chief (CinC). The President (for those who didn't know) is our CinC regardless of political party. We have no inside track on what happens inside those big important buildings where all those representatives meet All we know is that when those civilian representatives screw up the situation, they call upon the military to go straighten it out. If you keep asking us the same stupid questions repeatedly, you will get your ass kicked!

9. 'Your mama wears combat boots' never made sense to me---stop saying it! If she did, she would most likely be a vet and therefore, could kick your ass!

10. Bin Laden and the Taliban are not Communists, so stop saying 'Let's go kill those Commies!' And stop asking us where he is! Crystal balls are not standard issue in the military. That reminds me---if you see anyone calling those damn psychic phone numbers, let me know, so I can go kick their ass!

11. 'Flyboy' (Air Force), 'Jarhead' (Marines), 'Grunt' (Army), 'Squid' (Navy), 'Puddle Jumpers' (Coast Guard), etc., are terms of endearment we use describing each other. Unless you are a service member or vet, you have not earned the right to use them. That could get your ass kicked.

12. Last, but not least, whether or not you become a member of the military, support our troops and their families. Every Thanksgiving and religious holiday that you enjoy with family and friends, please remember that there are literally thousands of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen far from home wishing they could be with their families. Thank God for our military and the sacrifices they make every day. Without them, our country would get it's ass kicked.'

'It is the Veteran, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.

'It is the Veteran, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.

It is the Veteran, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.

'It is the Military who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag.'

(Please pass this on so I won't have to kick your ass!) :-) 'If you can read this, thank a teacher' If you are reading it in English, thank a Veteran '

I will add one more:

13. If you ever see anyone either standing for or singing the national anthem in Spanish - KICK THEIR ASS.

2. People don't stand when the flag goes by?
I always stand and put my hand over my heart when the flag passes by in a parade. Of course, I haven't been to many parades lately. I go up and shake hands of veterans and thank them for their service. Doesn't everyone?

I highly doubt it originated by a vet, or its one warped asshole who knows not of the document he/she allegedly swore to defend.

9. So am I ... and I served to support people's rights to do all those things.
Edited on Thu Jun-14-07 02:50 PM by TahitiNut
So did my father and uncles. I've met VERY FEW veterans who'd even partly agree with such a screed. I guess I'm lucky.

I'd guess the only exception would be people who falsely claim to be veterans. I'd be hard-pressed to not join in on an ass-kicking for 'stolen valor' frauds. By some estimates, there've been about five times as many guys claiming to be Viet Nam veterans as actually served. Detestable.

16. Roger that teammate
No doubt, you like me, spend your days strutting around town telling people your gonna kick their ass. I do so love the stories of the stupid few who dare wear a SEAL Trident without actually being a seal. Talk about getting your ass kicked.

26. I thought I've heard something like 50x or 100x the number of
ACTUAL Navy SEALS claim to have been SEALS - I will agree wholeheartedly that those people deserve a serious ass-kicking!

28. I observed a confrontation several years ago
The SEALS know who is and who is not a SEAL. A First Class Petty Officer was wearing the SEAL warfare device on his Summer Whites and he was not a SEAL. A real SEAL grabbed the device and ripped it off his uniform, tore up the shirt real good. The Sailor looked like he saw his life flash before him.

10. Probably written by some pimply faced adolescent fresh out of basic training.
Like a couple of guys fresh out of boot camp I saw at a bus station who decided they were gonna fuck with a couple of old salt squids. Just because the Marine Crotch says your tough, don't make it so.

11. Try telling this kid of a "bubblehead" she can't call a Marine a "jarhead," a sailor a "squid" or
whatever.

And, as much as I respect those who have served their country, no, I don't think I need to respect some draftee who shovelled shit at Ft. Shit, Texas more than anyone else. If you fought in combat, or went in harm's way, I'd love to hear about it.

15. Don't forget to salute the flag; right arm at a 45-degree angle, palm down
and fingertips at eye level. March in honor of the flag; left leg straight out and then rammed down, followed by the right leg. Vergiss das nicht! Die Fahne hoch! Sieg Heil!

18. I can get behind #4, the rest is of course crap though
(Particularly #13. The fuck?)

Civvie as I am, I still get pissed when people pretend that they were in the military, especially when they're really bad at doing so. Fortunately, most of them, well, are.

I'm a moderator on another (generally apolitical) forum, and one of the more annoying rightwinger types there is pretty much the archetypical freeper - anything Bush does or says is good as long as it doesn't involve Hispanic types, one can't comment on the military without being in it, members of the armed forces are intrinsically superior to civilians, etc. The guy claims to have been in the army through the eighties with numerous deployments, combat experience, etc., but refuses to say at any point where he was, what unit he was with, MOS, or anything, in addition to slipping just enough to make people doubt things more and more. (He claimed field manuals - I mean the basic ones, that you can get by Googling easily - are supposed to be classified, for instance.) He also does the standard wannabe thing of throwing around as much jargon as possible to make it appear as though he's With It, which really gives about the same impression to servicemembers I know as quoting half the Jargon File would give to computer programmers. After a point it's just embarrassing to all involved.

My favorite is still running into people under the age of sixty or so (Beharry, who I of course have not run into, notwithstanding) who claim to have won Victoria Crosses, though.

27. I run into that type as well on other boards -
the old "if I told you, I'd have to kill you! Hardee-har-har..."

Just the general amount of eye-rolling bullshit that I run into on the Internet leads me to believe that there's a shit-load of embellishment going on when it comes to describing one's own military service...

29. Heh, I love that line
Another more-or-less friend (I wish him no particular ill) pulled that one. He actually was in the ANG during the Gulf War, and played it up to the max by calling himself a combat veteran and so on. While technically true (he was in the guard during the war and did stuff towards it, albeit stateside), he kinda pushed it a bit far.

He actually pulled the "I'm not allowed to tell you" thing. See, he's got a spectacular leg injury - the joint's held together with pins, the works. It's really there. He claimed it was a combat wound received on some classified operation that he's forbidden on pain of death to discuss.

Then I ran into another of his friends, who proceeded to talk about that spectacular wipeout he had playing soccer back in mid-'91 that fucked up his knee something fierce...

There's a reason that if Person A talks about Person A's glorious military experience, I'll be skeptical most of the time unless there's evidence. If Person A's talking about Person B's GME, I'm considerably more willing to give the benefit of the doubt or more, but I've known very few people who boast about their military experience except for the transitioning ones who're still in (or just out of) Basic.

Seems to indicate that the Veteran gave us all our freedoms. Gosh, I thought it was the Constitution, perhaps the sender of this piece of dung needs to read the document.

20. and also they are supposedly giving the okay to burn the flag!
So any attempt by veterans to quash flag-burning would violate this document, wouldn't it! (Not, perhaps, what many of those circulating it may have intended ... perhaps they didn't read it carefully?)

Soldiers dying for the things mentioned in #12 will not have any effect, unless the reporters, poets, artists, students, etc. actually follow through with their own work (and defy any direct or subtle attempts to silence them).

22. Why does the letter-writer want to kick the President's ass?
Even I don't go that far.

But I guess we must. After all, Chimpy stood for the national anthem en Espanol...

http://thinkprogress.org/2006/05/02/national-anthem-sung-in-spanish-at-first-bush-inaugural/

From Cox News Service, 1/18/01:
The opening ceremony reflected that sentiment. A racially diverse string of famous and once famous performers entertained Bush, soon-to-be First Lady Laura Bush, Vice President-elect Richard B. Cheney and his wife, Lynne, who watched on stage from a special viewing area.

Pop star Jon Secada sang the national anthem in English and Spanish.
