The Passion of Mary Cheney - By Dan Savage
LOVE Dan Savage!!! Love, love, love him! :loveya:

In today’s New York Times Mary Cheney defends her decision to get her lezbo self knocked the fuck up. Like her father, Mary Cheney believes she shouldn’t have to answer for her party’s attacks on same-sex parents.

“When Heather and I decided to have a baby, I knew it wasn’t going to be the most popular decision,” Ms. Cheney said, referring to her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe. She then gestured to her middle—any bulge disguised by a boxy jacket—and asserted: “This is a baby. This is a blessing from God. It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate, on either side of a political issue. It is my child.”
Nice try, Mary.

Yes, it’s a baby, not a prop. My kid isn’t a prop either, but that never stopped right-wingers from attacking me and my boyfriend over our decision to become parents. The fitness of same-sex couples to parent is very much part of the political debate thanks to the GOP and the Christian bigots that make up its lunatic “base.” You’re a Republican, Mary, you worked on both of your father’s campaigns, and you kept your mouth clamped shut while Karl Rove and George Bush ran around the country attacking gay people, gay parents, and our children in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006. It’s a little late to declare the private choices of gays and lesbians unfit for public debate, Mary.

3. Dick Gephardt's daughter was on Jon Stewart's show last night
saying much the same thing, although not quite as 'bitey' as Dan Savage. I love Dan Savage. He gets right to the point.

8. Crissy was TERRIFIC! She's someone I'd love to know.
She was alert, humourous, adroit, and adept at putting Mary's tawdry corruption in its place.

4. Saw the Daily Show last night with Chrissy Gephardt on
I had completely forgotten that Gephardt also had a gay daughter. Maybe because she doesn't use her orientation in attempts to convince sexual "minorities" to vote against their own interests.

Mary Cheney's pregnancy is only a big deal because the assholes who support her father are the ones who said it should be. I don't even know if Gephardt's daughter and her partner have kids, nor should I know about it, unless I know them personally. Which probably won't happen, since I'm not a big fan of her dad after the whole rose garden war supporting thing.

9. Mary is her mother's child, that's for sure.
Her fake indignation and shock over how people would react to her baby is no different than the fake shock her mother used to attack Kerry after he made his remark. They can make fun of others, but no one dare criticize them.

10. That is so true.
They live in their own world and have their own set of rules. Everyone else can go Cheney themselves.

12. Kerry was right. If we asked Mary Cheney, if "she was just trying to be herself"
to be the person she was born to be", then she would have to say, "Yes. I am an asshole hypocrite who supported an anti-gay rights administration"

16. Mary Cheney is the worst kind of coward.
She wants to follow her personal lifestyle, and she doesn't mind going public with it. She knows full well that it will put her and her political father under an intense spotlight. Does she stand up defiantly and say, "This is me, this is my choice, so go fuck yourself!"? Oh, hell no. She hides behind Daddy's political might tells everyone she doesn't want to talk about it.

It's tough to admire her despite her rough road.

20. Absolute lack of moral courage and rank hypocrisy.
I often wonder how these people live with themselves.

Maybe when they get old they will regret their cowardice but maybe not.

22. Her attitude also reeks of privilege.....
Edited on Sat Feb-03-07 12:45 PM by Jade Fox
the kind of privilege which believes any action is okay if the "right" kind of people do it.

The wealthy don't believe rules apply to them. Therefore, they can condemn an action in others while feeling no discomfort when they indulge in it themselves.

21. She's now a criminal in Virginia
They outlawed same-sex cohabitation in 2006. By law, she should be evicted from her residence and most likely have her child taken away at birth -- and she voted for it.
