"What do you want to talk to the Congressman about?" "Iran, Iraq, & Impeachment."

That's how my conversation with the staffer at my Republican Congressman's office started out just a few minutes ago.

I basically laid it on the line; that the Republicans are the only ones who can stop Bush before he starts World War III.

I said I could see the buildup to a war in Iran starting, just like the one with Iraq did, and that from everything I've read, Iran poses no threat to us, and won't even be in a position to do so for several years anyway.

Then I said I want Congress to stop funding the Iraq war, bring the troops who are already there home, and not to allow this "surge."

Then I said I hoped the Congressman would support impeachment proceedings against both Bush & Cheney because of their lying the country into war as well as their criminal negligence in the Katrina response, to name only two offenses.

I told him that I regard lying to take the country into war as treason, plain & simple.

All this was after giving him my name, address, phone number, and e-mail address.

So I guess I'll be walking across the pond next time I wanna visit family back in the States, but it had to be said.

1. Great! Too often people "don't bother" with their Repub Rep. . .
. . .a big mistake. When we don't hit the Republicans as hard as the Dems, we are just enabling them to say "Well, I'm not hearing <whaterver> from my constitutions."

All the "I"s ultimately boil down to just one: Impeachment. Bush and Cheney have made it crystal clear that nothing short of removal will stop them; not even hitting them with the Congressional purse will do it. Bush said it all when he told us he'd be using the massive power of the American presidency as he pleases even if Barney is the only being on the planet that hasn't turned against him.

BTW, in re: case for impeachment. Torture and spying have already been investigated, and even adjudicated. They just need to draft articles and make the case in impeachment hearings. No "long painful process" they like to invoke to shut us up.

From http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Senator/10"> Rationalizing for Inaction on Impeachment:

. . .charges have already been investigated and even adjudicated. They have admitted violating FISA -- and have tried to "defend" it (mutually exclusively) by claiming inherent authority and congressional approval. GOP Senator Specter himself has already scoffed at the defense.

The (formerly) Supreme Court has already ruled in Hamdan that Geneva applies to Gitmo. Behind the Euphemedia smokescreen of tribunal tinkering lies the reality of the decision: Three Years of War Crimes had already been committed. Similarly, the lies about WMD that terrorized the nation into war are already "old news." There is no fig leaf left.

2. Good luck on getting a response.
Great questions! Surely the repubs know they will be in the crapper if they continue to follow George. A reminder from their constituents is necessary.

It truly is amazing how bush and cheney can brazenly say they don't care what anyone thinks about their war plans or how they intend to run this country. In other words, they are telling us we don't count, bush got the votes and he has a mandate.

Then it seems appropriate for the "people" to give them a pink slip. We hired we can fire.
