Iraqi troops not surging as planned

President Bush�s so-called �surge� of troops has started in Baghdad, but it already appears that the Iraqis are having a hard time keeping their end of the deal.

But it already it appears some of the units, mostly from the Kurdish north, are suffering from high rates of absenteeism. Gen. George Casey, the Army chief of staff nominee and outgoing top commander in Iraq, said during his confirmation hearing yesterday that the Iraqi units sent as part of the surge are operating at about 55 to 65 percent strength.

Pace said that commanders are trying to figure out a way to correct the problem, but he assured reporters it isn�t all bad news.

�They're not at the level we would like them to be total strength-wise, but they are showing up on the time they said they would,� Pace said.
