Anyone see the Barry Goldwater Documentary on HBO?
Caught most of it this AM. Think it was done by a daughter or granddaughter. A few things.... If he were alive today, (he died in 1998) he'd be a democrat, no doubt. He was against the Feds telling women what they could do re abortion. His oldest daughter had an abortion in the mid 50's and his wife started the Planned Parenthood chapter in Arizona back in the 30's, IIRC. Also, detested those religion peddlers getting into his party. Said he'd kick Falwell if he had the chance. Also, didn't oppose Gays being in the military. Had a grandson who is gay.

Would love some comments.

Re that TV commercial The Johnson campaign ran in 1964. The one with the little girl playing with a daisy as a voice counts back to zero and a nuke explods.... Seems to me fair if Barry was quoted as saying, "I'd like to lob a nuke into the mens room of the Kremlin."

Comments?

It was a great documentary. Goldwater was a true conservative .... not socially conservative and fiscally corrupt, which you're right, puts his views in stark contrast to the modern day Republican Party. It was really interesting to hear Hillary talk about being a Goldwater Girl when she was a teenager in the Chicago burbs. My favoriate part, however, was Goldwater's kids talking about their dad, his political views and how the private man they knew was so different from the public personna. Very moving ....

On edit;

I forgot to mention, suprisingly, I actually found myself in agreement with a lot of his views. Not the extreme part, but the pragmatic side of him who fought against the theocratic side of the party. Goldwater would not be a friend of the religious right were he around today.

2. Damn, he would be a Democrat...
weird to think he was once considered Mr. Conservative. I wonder if we're becoming "conservative" while the Republicans are merely becoming religious radicals.

4. Read John Dean's "Conservatives Without Conscience"
He lays out thirteen characteristics of classical Goldwater conservatism. I was reading them and was struck by how much I agreed with them. Then Dean notes that of the thriteen characteristics, six or seven now represent today's progressive viewpoint.

So yeah, I too expect Goldwater would have become a Democrat. And I for one would have been damn glad to have him in the fold.

5. DLC dems would call Goldwater far left
DLC panders to evangelicals, big business, and want to destroy unions. Wonderful democratic values.
