Remember the "Guardian Angels"? Well, they're in my town

This story from our local paper tells it all. The area of New Haven they are patrolling, along with Orthodox Jewish residents (who are armed)are on one side of my neighborhood, Westville, although I have seen any patrols on my street.

This is so sad for those of use who love living in the cultural capital of our state. If violent crime suddenly decreases, I wonder if we'll see more vigilanteism, designed to "solve our problems". I am extrememly worried that an innocent bystander gets shot and we could have more violence break out. New Haven has recently had several shootings, some of them fatal, which is scary enough by themselves.

I am not armed, nor do I plan to be. I live in a wonderfully diverse neighborhood with fine neighbors. Our mayor lives a few blocks away. I am getting edgier by the day. This is a tough situation.

2. I've had one experience with them directly
Edited on Sat Jun-16-07 01:48 PM by JNelson6563
Many years ago I went to a concert in Detroit and I got seperated from my friends after the concert. I couldn't remember where they parked so I went looking for their car through the parking areas, trying to jog my memory. Lots of time went by and eventually almost everyone was gone and I was walking alone, late at night. One of the GA's came up to me and asked me if I needed help. I told him my situation and he flagged down a car with a few college girls in it. He talked to them and they offered me a ride that I happily accepted. On the way home I found out they lived in Ann Arbor which made my destination way far out of their way.

I'll never forget that. I still am very grateful to that Guardian Angel and those girls, wherever they may be today.

3. Glad you had a good experience. My fear is that more, not less,
violence, will ensue. But maybe not. The problem is that the violdence is spreading from one neighborhood to another. I go very few places after dark and don't go near some areas. I'm feeling good that I have a state trooper living across the street from me and he parks his car in his driveway. I think having that car there is a deterrent. And while I'm not armed, I know he is and is trained and would call in a flood of backup if the need arose.
