POINTING THE WAY FOR PROSECUTORS
Under fire, not in retreat

Gonzales' plan for attorney reviews would further politicize process

By Andrew Zajac, a national correspondent based in the Tribune's Washington Bureau
Published June 17, 2007

Atty Gen. Alberto Gonzales so far has survived a political crisis over the firing of nine U.S. attorneys, a rare potential vote of no-confidence in the Senate and numerous calls for his resignation.

His response? Gonzales recently proposed tightening the leash on the men and women who prosecute federal crimes across the nation.

Gonzales described what he delicately calls "a more vigorous and a little bit more formal process" for annually evaluating prosecutors. What that means, as he explained it, is hauling in every U.S. attorney for a meeting to hear, among other things, politicians' beefs against the prosecutor.

If that should happen, expect the fair-mindedness and independence Americans still count on from their Justice Department to slip.

7. Little Gonzo is just doing the job Bush appointed him for.
Doing everything possible to have a complete takeover of the judicial branch of government by the most conservative wing of the Republican party-a right wing stranglehold that could last for decades.

I think the Democrats will keep the heat on Gonzales until he is out. Eventually Bush will convince him to fall on his sword.

9. Bush still in place. Multiple felonies, including torture, mass murder,
Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 03:28 PM by Peace Patriot
domestic spying, secret prisons, invading and occupying a foreign country in violation of international law, lying to Congress on matters of grave concern, gross malfeasance in multiple agencies (including, but not limited to, the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, NORAD, FEMA, EPA, and NASA), gross financial mismanagement, being AWOL during two national emergencies, violation of the constitutional prohibition against the establishment of religion, harboring criminals, violating the Constitutional balance of powers (the "unitary executive," "signing statements," recess appointments), contempt of Congress, creating private armies with public funds, excessive and illegal secrecy, placing those under his command in harm's way without cause, and inflicting them with excruciating moral dilemmas regarding illegal acts and war crimes, and acting as the agent of a foreign power (Saudi Arabia) and multinational corporations.

Cheney still in place. Multiple felonies, all of the above, plus outing a covert CIA agent and an entire WMD counter-proliferation network putting all of their lives in grave danger and creating serious potential hazard for American civilians and others in the path of illicit WMDs, all for the purpose of telling baldfaced lies to Congress and the American people on matters of war, holding a secret meeting at which his oil cronies divided up Iraq's oil fields in spring 2001 (before 9/11), conspiracy to commit war, and war profiteering (a million dollars a year in "golden parachute" compensation tied to Halliburton stock and its no-bid contracts with the Pentagon).

Alberto Gonzales, still in place. Multiple felonies, including conspiracy in all of the above, plus aiding the perpetrators of harm to a CIA network and innocent bystanders by providing the targets of the FBI/DoJ investigation of that matter with 12 hours notice in which to shred documents, burn hard-drives and concoct cover stories, and interfering in multiple legal cases in the Dept. of Justice for political and illegal purposes, including influencing elections, curtailing legitimate prosecution of Republicans, perpetrating unwarranted prosecution of Democrats, vote suppression and violation of the Voting Rights and Civil Rights Acts, by pressuring and firing principled U.S. attorneys and hiring and promoting toadies; telling Congress multiple lies about these crimes and suborning at least one witness.

Karl Rove, still in place. Multiple felonies, including conspiracy in all of the above, plus running a political "mafia" from the White House, for the purpose of stealing elections.

Now then, what will this "tightening of the screws" on U.S. Attorneys be about?

For our Democratic Party leadership, "impeachment" was "off the table" from Day One of the surprising victory that the American people gave them, by outvoting the Bushite voting machine corporations (who control the vote with "trade secret" code). Their second punishment of the American people for putting them in power was escalating the Iraq War, which 70% of the American people oppose and want ended, and larding another $100 billion into Dick Cheney's retirement fund. And they couldn't even get a "vote of no confidence" on that Bushel Cartel worm in the Justice Department, Alberto Gonzales, so that impeachment is also "off the table." As for fixing the egregiously non-transparent vote counting system, run by Bushite corporations: Ha-ha. No dice. Get used to it, suckers! The Bush Junta is untouchable, whether because of fear (anthrax, small planes falling out of the air, blackmail) or collusion (bought and paid for War/Corporate Democrats).

I would say that, despite these favorable circumstances for the Fascist Junta that has seized our government, Gonzales' "more vigorous" and "a little bit more formal process" for vetting Bushite toadies in U.S. Attorneys' positions will involve hooding, waterboarding, shoving foreign objects up rectums, guard dogs, isolation, excessive cold, excessive heat, electrifying genitals, beatings and threats of death. No, I don't mean that the U.S. Attorneys will be directly subjected to these things. I mean that they will be tested for their ability to laugh at them, or be indifferent to them, by being shown photos, videos and perhaps actual real-time torture sessions. The U.S. Attorneys will only suffer the physical indignity of being hooked up to lie-detector-type machines that register heart rate, sweat, etc. If their vitals remain flat in the face of horrible human suffering, they can continue in Rove's employ; if they evidence fear and loathing, they will be debriefed by nameless, badgeless scientists from Blackwater or perhaps retired to "the Village."

The U.S. Attorneys who pass the "test" will follow three directives from Rove: 1) protect the "trade secret" vote counting at all costs; 2) protect Bush, Cheney, Rove, Gonzales and Rumsfeld, and all closely tied corporations, from investigation, prosecution, and lawsuits, and destroy any evidence of their ties to the crime rings of their underlings; and 3) preen their resumes for a last-minute "surge" of hundreds of Bush "recess" appointments to the federal courts.

The Bush Junta's M.O. is excess. So, despite the Democratic leadership rolling over and playing dead, upon being given control of Congress, the Junta would still leave no stone unturned--and no soul unraped--in their insatiable lust for evil power. They have all the tools they need now, to keep genuine Democrats from getting elected, and to control any who might slip through the cracks. The other Democratic leaders, long in collusion with them, will give them no trouble on any matter of importance. But still they fret and still they worry. The American people are in a slow boil of rage. They know this. And there are a number of out-of-control and insouciant generals, some retired, some not, some very pissed off CIA honchos, and several angry whistleblowers and many potential ones. It's not time to be lax, and to use pussy methods. Time to tighten the screws even more, and rip that veil off of Blind Justice.

You might say, if they control the vote counting, why bother with all this? Well, America's political system, and society, and vast expanses of peoples, cultures and lands, is very complex. It is not just a matter a tweaking the vote count--though that capacity is the coup de grace of fascist control (--always useable in an emergenecy, such as the Kerry landslide in 2004). It's more a matter of keeping with vast populace as clueless as possible, and demoralized and disorganized at the grass roots level. The people are the enemy, not the Democrats. Also, I'm not kidding about lust of insatiable power. They can't get enough of it. They have more countries to invade (Iran, Venezuela et al) and much more looting to do. It's endless, really. There are riches everywhere. Now, I actually think they will "retire" in '08, and let a War/Corporate Democrat take the heat for a while. Depending on who they light upon as the best protector (protectress?) of the enormous fascist gains they have made for every kind of thievery and lawlessness, this designated "Democrat" may nor may not invade Iran right away (with a "Gulf of Tonkin"-type incident, deja vu Vietnam all over again), may or may not make some limp, temporary "peace efforts" to allay the American people--leaving the vast new structure of war they've built in Iraq in place--may or may not institute a military Draft (likely, yes--since military service will soon be one of the only forms of employment remaining), may or may not have to clamp down on food riots, veterans' protests, old granny's in wheelchairs protests, and general civil rebellion--and can easily be turned out of office, if and when necessary.

Or perhaps the plan all along has been to greatly advance the fascist corporate cause, with Bush/Cheney & Neocon cabal, send them with their new private armies to South America, to get that situation under control (democracy in oil rich countries), then go for broke with a War/Corporate Democrat who is fully in league with them and has been all along (I'm thinking Christopher Dodd--not sure about Clinton, though many things the Clintons have done point that way). Remember Seattle '99? Think: War/Corporate "Democrat" with the powers of pervasive, illegal domestic spying, indefinite detention without trial, the power to assign anyone "enemy combatant" status and bury them in prison forever, the power of torture, to power to re-write or ignore laws, a basically shredded Constitution, no-fly lists, and vast, secret black operations. No more police-instigated melees against "free trade." The organizers will quietly disappear, or be bullied into silence, before anything gets going.

Ah, me! I am in a black mood today, thinking of all the U.S. and Iraqi fathers who have lost their sons or daughters to these butchers. Some Father's Day for them.

I think we WILL get our country back. I have great faith in the American people. But it may be a long and difficult road.

10. HOW AM I SUPPOSE TO FEEL CONFIDENT ABOUT FILING CHARGES
Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 07:24 PM by The Backlash Cometh
AGAINST THE SONS OF BITCHES IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD, KNOWING THIS SHIT?

I mean, there are white collar crimes out here in need of prosecution, but if politics is obstructing a fair process, what are we suppose to do?

Maybe I should write to Michael Moore to see if he'll make another movie to show the absurdity of the world some of us live in. I'd name the movie, "White Lies and the stupid white men who live them."

15. And your point is?
Do you have any doubt in your mind that Gonzalez, Thomas, Scalia and any other minority that was appointed to a special position in the GOP, was hand-picked because they'll carry on the agenda? You know, the one that makes sure that no one else will really ever challenge the dominance of "good Americans," i.e. Christian white men?

12. Two questions:
How can you 'tighten' the leash if you've given, completely unsupervised, to other inexperienced cronies?

How can you 'tighten' the leash if there isn't a lawyer in the collar? IIRC everybody with two brain cells to knock together is leaving the DoJ like fleas jumping off of a dead dog.
