Did anyone see the (gasp) Jigaloo ad on CNN?
Are these people crazy, or is it me? Be aware that I am a strict First Amendment supporter and I don't care if they call their product Southern Fried Shit. This just seems like a move that's bound to get some (many) people mad, and draw lots of criticism. A dumb marketing move.

It appears that Jigaloo (sic) is a spray lubricant on the order of WD-40. The ad ran during Late Edition.

5. That's what came to my mind when I heard it the first time...
Are ad makers utterly clueless?!

Or do they think the "atmosphere" is so "safe" now and can come out of the "closet"?

Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 01:55 PM by IMModerate
You have to see it. It's subtle.

On edit: I take that back, there's nothing in the ad. I had another look at the ad. For the record, I'm not offended or enraged, but I thought that this is a poor marketing move as there will be those that are. Looks like a good product. It is a silicon based spray lube, where WD-40 is hydrocabon based, I think.

Here's the ad: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/597780/jig_a_loo_funny_ad/

Here's the google search with links about the "funny name." http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=jigaloo

Not intentionaly insulting. Perhaps they haven't the memory those of us of a certain age have.
You'd figure a branding researcher would've caught it pre-production, though.

24. From their website (about name)
JIG-A-LOO was invented in Quebec in 1958. Its creator exclaimed "Ti-gi-dou," the Canadian phrase meaning "I've got it!" when he found the winning formula, which quickly became JIG-A-LOO. The founders of JIG-A-LOO World, backed by a group of private investors, are Mr. David Gilmour, President and CEO, and Mr. Bernard Allaire, Chairman of the Board of Directors. The company is on the verge of launching another revolutionary product in the fall of 2007.

12. Whatever. I had to read this thread to find out why the word would be
offensive. Maybe it's me but for some reason I don't go around looking for something to be outraged about. There's enough that happens to naturally cause that condition so I don't need to go make something up.

18. Well, there might be a good reason and it might never have occured to them..
...that their was a similar word. I don't think everyone is familiar with the racist term it sounds like.

Of course, I don't see any point in getting upset over it. It reminds me of all the dust up over the use of the word "niggardly" which besides having an unfortunate similarity to the racial slur, is a completely different word.

29. How about both? Just kidding...
I see nobody clarified, so I'll do it, while begging pardon. There is a racial slur, jigaboo, which is but one letter away from the product name, Jig-A-Loo. And that's what I thought of when I first heard the ad, and my reaction was more "WTF?" than to take offense. I just thought it was weird.

17. Here's the explanation
Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 01:49 PM by Canuckistanian
It's a French-Canadian expression.

The name "Jig-A-Loo" can be traced all the way back to 1958, when the product inventor finally came up with the right formula and exclaimed, "Ti-gi-dou!"

A common Canadian expression used when someone finds a solution to a problem, "Ti-gi-dou" loosely translates to "I've got it!" and is still used as salutation at the end of phone conversations.

http://jigaloo.com/en/faq/

edit: My wife hears the expression all the time, pronounced more like Ziggie-do! It's almost like "Yippee!"

20. Confusing the First Amendment
The First Amendment has to do with the government not silencing us. It has nothing to do with employers not silencing us or rules at jobs or people boycotting racism until the racist is gone..Imus. It has nothing to do with boycotting a product until a racist ad is pulled. Nothing.

25. Confusing what I said.
My reference to First Amendment absolutism was to affirm that I myself am tolerant of all rights to speech. I'm not advocating any boycott, indeed, I plan to get some Jigaloo! (As bad as that sounds.) And my first impression was wrong, though not unwarranted. I just thought it was a stupid naming considering...

21. White lithium grease is much better anyway.
WD40 is stinky and attracts dirt making the item sprayed eventually clog up again. Once you switch to white lithium grease you will never go back. Series!!111!!

40. Sometimes products from other countries bear names that are problematic
A Japanese soft drink was allegedly called Kalpis, and didn't do well in test marketing here for obvious reasons. I think someone should write to the Canadian company and let them know that the name is problematic here in the States.
