McConnell: Support growing for Iraq Study Group plan
By Klaus Marre
June 17, 2007

The Republican leader in the Senate said Sunday that support in the GOP is growing to follow recommendations from the Iraq Study Group.

“The president himself has spoken favorably of the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group, which…basically involves still having troops forward- deployed but getting them off the point which would obviously reduce our casualties, and possibly reducing our numbers as well,” Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said.

He pointed to the September military and diplomatic report on Iraq as a critical point at which strategy and troop levels can be reevaluated.

“I think everybody anticipates that there’s going to be a new strategy in the fall,” McConnell said on CBS’s Face the Nation. “I don’t think we’ll have the same level of troops, in all likelihood, that we have now. The Iraqis will have to step up, not only on the political side, but on the military side, to a greater extent.”

Former Rep. Lee Hamilton (D-Ind.), who co-chaired the Iraq Study Group, said Sunday that the situation in Iraq is “grave, dire, deteriorating” and pushed for a non-military solution to quelling violence and bringing stability to Iraq.

“There is still no military solution to Iraq,” he said. “The military plays a hugely important role, but you must have vigorous, robust efforts to get a national reconciliation.”

1. This is supposed to be good news??? Remember who wrote
the Iraq Study Group Report... Mr. Baker...lawyer who helped steal the 2000 election...lawyer to the oil companies...lawyer to Halliburton. Lawyer who wants troops in Iraq indefinately.

6. and Baker's been saying that he thinks September is TOO SOON
to evaluate the 'progress' they're seeking. He hasn't backed of of the report's timetable, but he's looking for wiggle room.

All the while he's saying that he believes Iraq is now the center of Bush's terror war.

2. What got my dander up with that cheap-shot senator was the way
he said it. He said there was growing support among the republicans and even some democrats for the ISG report's recommendations. Like we haven't done everything under the sun to drag those lying shit brackets around to something a little more pragmatic than the * doctrine.

This kind of automatic slam and lie by insinuation is simply the wrong thing to expect from a man of national prominence. No damn wonder there's so little respect for any politician, with him as an example to teach your kids.

5. they always want to restart the game
as if there can be some other conclusion to the escalating disaster if they just up the ante with more militarism. That's what Bush-licking creeps like McConnell want.

Our troops shouldn't be left in Iraq, hostage to the policy of holding the Iraqis hostage until they get their shit together.

Hey Lee, why don't you finish...ah fuck it. Just another timetable for prolonging our eradication of professional soldiers by the native people. On their soil.

Sure. We can win. We can force the Iraqis to 'step up' series!!!

It can be done, all join hands and lock minds onto Iraqi.

9. McConnell's remark about a "new strategy in the fall" reads to me like
Edited on Sun Jun-17-07 09:13 PM by Boo Boo
they're just marking time---as if Sept. is (politically) a "decent interval" before changing course. I've heard a couple Republicans make remarks like this now, and it makes me want to puke. It's clear that "giving it a chance" is really just a political ploy, and the troops being killed and maimed in this "surge" are doing so in service to the Republican Party.

It's not the first time Bush has sacrificed lives for partisan politics.
