Always. It was like that in 2004, 2000, 1996, 1992, 1988...

This tells me that the idealized Democrat is far better than the idealized Republican. Or essentially, it's FDR/Kennedy going up against Reagan in the minds of voters. It's just a shame we have a hard time finding that one Democrat that can be idealized like that in real life.

2. A nice start would be a Democrat who stands up for actual Democratic

principles instead of the usual namby-pamby "centrist" pablum we end up getting stuck with.

Neither of them is getting 52% in these match-ups, and this is hardly a representative sample of various pairings. It sounds like each of them isn't as popular as "generic Democrat".

I wonder what it would be like to mix-and-match the top 4 of each party.

Lest we forget, too: this is the Wall Street Journal.
