6 people killed on Missouri waterways since Thursday

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. | Six people have died on Missouri waterways since Thursday, including four at the Lake of the Ozarks, the Missouri State Water Patrol said.

Water Patrol Capt. Matt Walz said here was evidence that all four of the victims at the Lake of the Ozarks had been drinking prior to drowning.

Divers pulled the body of Mary Rembold, 43, of Roach, from the lake around 8 p.m. Thursday. The patrol said she had jumped off the back of a boat without a life jacket at 2:15 p.m.

At 10:40 p.m. Thursday, Rodger Spooner, 45, of Stover, was attempting to put a life jacket on when he fell into the water, the patrol said, attributing the fall to intoxication. His body was recovered at 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, Jonathan Snyder, 25, of Sommerville, Pa., was reported missing after friends noticed he wasn’t with them as they were leaving Anderson Hollow Cove, commonly known as “Party Cove.”

Officers searched the popular party spot, which they say was filled with thousands of boats as is typical for a Saturday afternoon, until 11 p.m. before giving up the search.

The body of Snyder, identified as a second lieutenant in the engineering school at Fort Leonard Wood, was recovered Sunday afternoon floating in about 12 feet of water.

The body of Juan Howell, 21, of Richland, was found Sunday afternoon in 25 feet of water, about 10 feet from a dock where he was last reported seen at 1 a.m. by two men who had been playing cards with him before going inside to sleep.

Elsewhere, Cameron Himes, 18, of Monet, died after diving off a bluff at the Old Rock Quarry at Truman Lake on Saturday afternoon.

The water patrol said Himes was swimming with friends when he dove off the bluff, then resurfaced and yelled for help. Friends brought Himes back to the bank, where he was in full cardiac arrest, the patrol said.

On the Mississippi River near Wittenberg, Terry Brunner, 46, of Frohna, was swimming near a small island at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when he signaled his friends that he was having trouble. The friends were unable to locate him and called for help. His body was recovered at 11:05 p.m. Saturday.
