Couple Wants 50k To Not Abort
What The Hell Is This?

Are These People For Real?

http://www.helpmybabylive.com

About Us
As happens to many young couples, my girlfriend and I have found ourselves confronted with a decision to make about having a child, and we're not sure what to do. There are many options available to us, and a difficult evaluation of the responsibilities and obligations, as well as the joys, that come with raising a child.

Our two real options are either having and raising the child, or aborting. While we'd like to think that adoption is a viable option for us, my girlfriend doesn't believe that she'd be able to give up a child after giving birth to it, and that's not something I'm going to pressure us into doing. We also don't want to be subconsciously resentful of a child that we kept when we weren't ready for it. If we're not ready to raise it, we're not going to bring a baby into the world.

----------------------------------

We Need Your Help
It comes down to this. If we can't raise the $50,000 in the next 3 months, we'll have to choose abortion. We don't like it, and we don't like the nature of our appeal, but it is what it is. We're asking you to donate money to us using the link to your left. Anything you can give would be appreciated.

Understand that you are giving the money to us, with no obligation on our part. We want to remain anonymous, for our sake and for that of our child, if we have one. We don't think it'd be right for anyone to know that their existance depended upon a fiscal calculation, regardless of the rationality of that decision. We're not going to contact you, we're not going to post pictures, we're not going to give you status updates. After three months, our decision will be made, and this site will go away.

:wtf:

Nobody seriously approaches the issue of abortion this way. This is someone who is just trying to make some cash by playing on the sympathies of the Anti-Abortion movement.

31. Remember the guy who ran the savetoby.com site?
He made something like $27,000 before the people running PayPal decided to place themselves in the position of censor and shut down his account.

P.T. Barnum's rule applies here, as well. Suckers who are, indeed, born every minute will send this person money. And, since it's the ultimate in cynical capitalism, wing nuts had best not complain. I just love it when their rhetoric bumps right up against itself, don't you?

89. I'm with you on this. I've always wanted some poor woman fighting
through the pro-lifers picket lines to get into to an abortion clinic to ask any of those a-holes if they wanted to raise her unwanted/unplanned for child. If not, then shut the F up and get outta the way.

5. Fucking Hell. Talk about a winner for the GOP
A) If they don't get the money, all the pundits can point to the liberal left bloggers who don't put their money where their mouth is
B) If they don't get the money, I'm assuming they're NOT going to send back all the checks/paypal orders
C) If they don't get the money, Mitt Romney, McCain, Guiliani etc can jump in and be the 'hero'
D) If they do get the money, they're 50 grand richer anyway, and could just "change their mind" or have a GOP prez candidate

this stinks of right-wing plant

69. Quick curiosity about Point A, DS1
Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 07:29 AM by Montauk6
Though it's true the freepers can spin to the point of gross absurdity, this one baffles me. Wouldn't the onus be on the right to raise the cash as they're so against abortion? I can understand if, say, the con artists (and I'm convinced this thing is a total scam) were crying, "if we can't raise (INSERT RANDOM DOLLAR AMT HERE) to abort, we're going to have to bring an unwanted child into the world blah blah blah."

And of course they are anonymous, so is there even a way to prove she is actually pregnant?
By the way, what are the laws on how late into pregnancy can it be terminated?
Presumably she would have to be some time into the pregnancy (to know that she is pregnant), and if they are going to wait another three months?

I seriously doubt this is legit. In fact, the vision I'm getting is of a couple of dissolute college guys hammering the website out between drunks, giggling insanely all the way.

Anyone who can get the antiabortionists to cough up has my blessing, though, since those are the last people to care about somebody else's problems beyond making sure they wring the last bit of misery out of them.

Oh, and the bottom line for choice is whether or not the woman wants that child at this time. Period.

Not asking much - just reasonable.

If it were true - I have no problem helping out.

I would like to know if the church is - A left wing christian, but reasoned thing I guess.

I don't assume more than this reasonable thing.

If it is your potential childs life against reasonable questions - you answer the questions.

If you can't or won't - guess that "life" didn't mean much to you to begin with - right??

If they didn't and it was true - extraordinary claims do require extraordinary proofs.

I like this post you made - you cut to the chase very well.

and I think a house. But he kept people informed. The London Times bought a nice big rectangle and put their logo on it, but a 2x2 pixel array cost $100 so a bunch of people bought little tiny specks and put all sorts of oddball links on there. It's like buying a brick to fund some public-works project.

Air America Phoenix did a fundraiser with it last year after the Christians bought out the old AAR affiliate.

You know what's really ironic: it won't be any "Right-to-lifers"
sending them the $$$, it'll be all us evil "liberals".

They could put this in every fundie "church newsletter" in the country,
and they wouldn't make the 50 grand. Putting it on some LIBERAL blogs
will get the $$$ rolling in!

Nomad, I'll see your :wtf: and raise you a :banghead:
That's some seriously fucked-up shit right there.

71. Wouldn't this be murder?
Don't shout me down just yet. Consider this...

It's not too much of a stretch for this to be considered extortion, which is a felony. Any time a death occurs during or as a result of a felony, it is considered murder. I mean, Scott Peterson was charged for murder on his unborn child, so it's not a huge leap for this to be viewed in this manner

72. Actually - I think I'm with you on this ....
Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 10:52 AM by KneelBeforeZod
It is certainly illegal to hold an unborn child for ransom, and, as you noted in the Peterson case, a person can be tried for the murder of an unborn child. Would it not also be illegal for the parents of an unborn child to hold that child for ransom?

The question is whether a mother can be held responsible for the termination of an unborn child when she is as clearly distorted as this mother is. A father can certainly be held responsible (i.e. Scott Peterson). In cases like this ... I might support prosecution of both parents.

The right to choose is one thing ... the right to use that choice to extort money from the public is another entirely. This would be analagous to Terri Schaivo's husband offering to keep her alive if people paid a "hefty ransom" (cue Dr. Evil) ...

This type of callousness only makes the Choice community look ridiculous ... and is insulting to all of those women who have agonized over the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy.

Edited on Tue Jun-19-07 01:03 PM by triguy46
back in the 70s, a gun held to a border collie's head, with the text: "If you don't buy this magazine we'll kill this dog". This may just be the same joke, v2.0.

here's a link to a picture of the cover:

March 22, 1987 - 1 Mil is a drop in the bucket for Roberts. I think his annual take at the time was around 90 million.

84. Regardless of their desire for anonymity
There are several ways for law enforcement to begin a search for them if they so desire--and also for others to check it out as well.

First, check with whois.net to see who owns the domain.

Second, if any kind of posting can be found by them, they can be traced through their IP address.

Third, I would imagine if it's a couple of creative college students, they won't keep their mouths shut for very long, and eventually someone's gonna say something.

Now, IMHO, again regardless of who it is, I am fascinated. How can anyone on the right really hope to get the pro-choice folks contribute to this? I mean, I don't know about anyone else, but let's face it: our stance is to say to these people (couple or not), "good for you!" and comment them on having the right to decide which decision they're going to make.

Three months at the outside would place the woman at the beginning of a third tri-mester, the beginning of which is the end for most legal abortions (except yada, yada, "partial-borth abortions"), so that could happen if this is legit, which I strongly doubt.

No, the ones who would pay are the delusional folks on the radical religious right who will use this as just one example of how depraved those of us on the left are. However, since it sounds like a con game anyhow, we can all enjoy a little larceny of the gullible idiots on the right while their pockets are being emptied. :)

There was some nut in Canada doing something similar a few years ago. He had a duck tucked under his arm and he would walk up to people in city parks and threaten to break the duck's neck unless the person gave him $20.

I think it was in "News of the Weird".
