White House postpones meeting on Guantanamo
Decision delayed on closing prison

WASHINGTON -- The White House postponed a meeting of the administration's top senior foreign and defense policy officials scheduled for today to debate the future of the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, terrorism detention center, but officials said the issue of whether to close the facility is likely to be discussed again.

The high-level meeting was scheduled to help senior leaders decide whether the Guantanamo prison could be closed and its detainees moved to US prisons without risking their release by the new courts. Plans for the White House meeting were first reported yesterday by The Associated Press.

Following legal defeats and growing criticism at home and abroad, administration officials have begun reconsidering the future of Guantanamo and US detainee policies. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has urged that it be closed, and former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell last week called for its shutdown.

But the White House last night denied any decision was at hand .........

Should Guantanamo close?

Senior Bush administration officials are engaged in active discussions about closing the U.S. military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but deep divisions remain regarding the fate of the approximately 375 foreign detainees currently held there should the prison close, according to numerous officials familiar with the ongoing dialogue.

4. How about omething more Siberia-esque? GITMO is in the tropics.
I'm thinking a Gulag style facility in a remote valley in far north Alaska.

And, they could do pipeline repairs as community service after release, or caribou herding.

6. I assume you mean the prison, and not the whole Marine base?

7. You want to keep that base which is on a sovereign nation?
The Cuban-American Treaty, which established the lease in 1903,
now violates article 52 of the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.
The original imperialist base, yep, can't lose that one.

The treaty was part of the Platt Amendment, conditions for the withdrawal
of United States troops remaining in Cuba since the Spanish-American War.
Professor Alfred de Zayas also argues that the United States has broken the
terms of the treaty by allowing commercial use of the land and not giving
Cuba ultimate sovereignty over the area.
