I saw a very important movie last night that moved me deeply. I had a chance to meet yesterday afternoon with my old friend, Michael Moore, to talk about national health care. Earlier he had introduced me and other Members of Congress to the people chronicled in his movie, Sicko, who had endured unbelievable hardship at the hands of our nation's health insurance companies.
It was after I had seen the movie, however, that I came to appreciate the profound difference to society that universal health care provides. No family in Canada was wiped out by debt from health costs. No elderly French woman worried about whether she had enough money to fill her prescriptions. Emergency room care was quick and free. In England, they even have a cashier near the hospital exit door to provide the necessary funds to be transported home.
Contrast this with the hospital in LA that dropped off patients at skid row, some with IVs still in their arms because they couldn't pay their medical bills.
Michael Moore endorsed my bill HR 676 yesterday. I hope we can use the interest generated by this movie to get our country started down the road to provide universal health care to its citizens without any concern for profit. See this movie and encourage all your friends to see it too. It is truly a remarkable film.
