includes invading Iraq, war in Iran, etc. I think the immigration initiative Bush has been trying to push was always conceived as a victory lap, some kind of way to help cement the "permanent Republican majority" (RIP) by bringing in the Hispanic vote into the Republican fold.

However these preprogrammed events are often pushed without any consideration of events on the ground, where their administration and party stands at that moment, and what the actual results of their previous actions have been.

A really large portion of the Republican election time appeals, particularly during the Bush Jr. administration, have been to the base instincts of bigotry, in the form of anti-Arab, anti-Muslim sentiment in the "war on terror" as well as anti-gay sentiment what with the flogging of the various Defense of Marriage type legislation with each election. The type of immigration initiative championed by Bush now completely runs against that current. If the Bush administration were riding high right now, they might be able to get away with the contradiction, but they aren't, and they can't.

They need the money to GOTV, but this is a core issue and no amount of money will change the opinion of the base if they think they are being sold out to the financial backers of the Republican Party. Sometimes I'm just too damn obtuse....

I couldn't thank the Repugnicans enough for making racism and hating Mexican and Hispanics a wedge issue. They have handed Democrats the keys to dominating the West and, combined with the Midwest and East coast, the south can go suck eggs. How ironic as this new "southern strategy" will unravel the old one. Fools!

Don't the Repugnican pollsters see the rising numbers of LEGAL Hispanics who live and vote in the Southwest now? New Mexico, that figure reaches upwards of 50%. They're doing to the Hispanics now what they did to the blacks in the 50's and 60's...using them as a political weapon to attract a "base", but they'll pay for it dearly in general electios.

If those gringos could listen to the Hispanic radio stations...they'd hear angry AMERICANS who can't wait to get a piece of the GOOP in the next election. If Democrats are smart, they'll openly go after and organize the Hispanic vote in '08...using the words of a Tancredo or some other Repugnican to show them who is on the side of humanity and who isn't.
