2. Therein lies the risk of not impeaching.

4. So you think replacing Bush with someone like McCain --
which is what would happen -- would leave us all better off in 2008?

18. That would never happen.
If impeachments were on the way, Cheney would resign and Bush would appoint his replacement. Then Bush would resign and the Bush appointee would be President.

This is what happened when Richard Nixon faced impeachment, and how Gerald Ford became President.

22. The Senate would always approve another Senator. McCain would be
a shoo-in.

They've seen his violent temper

35. Whether it is McCain or some other Senator or Representative
doesn't really matter, although I am sure McCain would be approved -- as a matter of professional courtesy, if nothing else.

The point is, Bush would appoint someone of his own party, and barring some known serious misbehavior on that person's part (like being a racist, for example) any current Senator or Rep would almost surely be approved.

No way would Bush appoint someone like Pelosi.

38. Oh, I agree it would be a Republican
It would be interesting to see if Bush would appoint someone with aspirations to be the next president, or if he'd follow his history of appointing the most incompetent person in the country and/or whoever would piss off the Democrats the most.

What if he appointed Jeb?

26. And exactly how powerful was Ford?
How long did he keep his Presidency? Do you honestly think once Bush* and Cheney are gone that whoever takes command would any better or garner any votes to win the Presidency on their own? I don't...

28. Powerful enough to pardon Nixon
Not powerful enough to re-intervene in Indochina in 1975.

Ford made the 1976 election a lot closer than many people remember.

30. So then I guess Nixon should never have been forced to resign
Since it made absolutely no difference in who the President was. You want to suggest keeping Bush* and Cheney in Office, I don't, so I guess we will just have to disagree on this issue..

39. When you come down to it
It was the republican party which forced Nixon to resign, not the Dems.

ANd I disagree it made no difference who the President was. I believe that Nixon would have re-intervened to prevent the final collapse of South Vietnam.

19. But that's not how it would work.
We can't do a surprise impeachment. If impeachments were on the horizon, Cheney would resign and Bush would appoint a new V.P. Then Bush would resign and the new V.P. -- someone like McCain -- would become President.

Impeaching Bush and Cheney now won't put Pelosi in office, as many seem to think.

40. Forget impeachment...
Ain't gonna happen. The Democratic Senate likes having Chimp around to throw stones at.

At least Bush keeps their approval ratings in the teens. Without him, it drops to the single digits.

I am not pissed at you, just disappointed
since this is

17. I'll drop it on this thread...
But I'm willing to wager a considerable sum that I can prove this nation is at least incipiently fascist.

As for the OP, it depends on the Democrat that wins.

If Hillary wins, it's just Republic lite..

I'm personally torn between Kucinich and Ron Paul.

As a leftist, I agree wholeheartedly with Kucinich.

Unfortunately, as a libertarian I like quite a bit of what Paul has to say too.

Both of them are against the single most freedom destroying thing in the USA, the War On (some) Drugs.

I'm pro individual freedom, hence I could vote for either of them.

That being said, I would far rather vote for Kucinich.

23. Cali will Survive
It's a luxury of living on the Left Coast. Whatever bat-shit crazy stuff they do in DC, Cali has enough going to keep us sun-loving nut-jobs busy.

Or at least that's what I tell my 14-year old.

And then there's always British Columbia.
