Requires Real Player: http://www.pbs.org/frontlineworld/stories/india/india220vid.html

"An Indian scientist embeds a high-speed computer in a wall bordering a slum, turns it on, and watches what happens as children begin to teach themselves to use the machine. "

Gives one hope, doesn't it?

3. My Baby Sister Just Showed Me That...
Her boyfriend is taking a class about the digital divide, and they watched that in class.

When I saw it, I got a big huge grin on my face.

It's nice to feel hopeful every now and again, ya know?

10. This Post May Come As a Surprise To You...

Good Day SIR,

I am writing to you out of the reference of a mutual friend who told me of your trustworthy reputation. I am the administrator of funds for the UN cyberdivide project of Cameroon.

Due to corruption of the previous administrator resulting in remittances of several over-invoiced contracts, we have been left with a surplusage of our refundable account in the amount of 10 Million dollars. For to remit these funds our regulations restrict us to transfer to overseas accounts only.

We have secured all modalities for 100% risk free business in the transfer of these funds for your safekeeping, and in which we offer you to participate in 3 Million dollars for your services. It is of utmost importance that you maintain this business in strictest confidence....

20. I'll split the money with you
:)

Aren't you surprised at the number of people who actually think they are going to get some money out of these schemes?

It's time to move to some high-end real estate in Nigeria. That's all the rage, don't you know?

7. Have you ever heard of Vernor Vinge's theory of technological singularity?
Essentially, Vinge posits that humanity will eventually reach the point where technology will give us the power of gods (in some respects that's already happening) and humans today would not even recognize humans of that time as being human.

http://mindstalk.net/vinge/vinge-sing.html

The acceleration of technological progress has been the central feature of this century. I argue in this paper that we are on the edge of change comparable to the rise of human life on Earth. The precise cause of this change is the imminent creation by technology of entities with greater than human intelligence. There are several means by which science may achieve this breakthrough (and this is another reason for having confidence that the event will occur):

* There may be developed computers that are "awake" and superhumanly intelligent. (To date, there has been much controversy as to whether we can create human equivalence in a machine. But if the answer is "yes, we can", then there is little doubt that beings more intelligent can be constructed shortly thereafter.)
* Large computer networks (and their associated users) may "wake up" as a superhumanly intelligent entity.
* Computer/human interfaces may become so intimate that users may reasonably be considered superhumanly intelligent.
* Biological science may provide means to improve natural human intellect.

<much more>

11. Sturgeon's revelation:
Ninety percent of everything is crap.

Sturgeon must have been an optimist, the true figure is way closer to ninety nine percent.

8. That was day one...
Day Two: Researchers look on aghast as nine-year-old Bahrant Jariwala becomes first child in neighborhood to figure out how to download porn.

Day Three: Researchers get REALLY aghast when Bahrant discovers Free Republic. At 3pm local time, Bahrant has taught every kid in the slum that "those evil Indians are stealing all the jobs from us hard-working Americans." At 3:05pm, Bahrant has huge dent in the side of his skull earned when his mother whacked him upside the head with a 2x4 and told him to quit talking shit about people from India because he is one.

Day Four: Bahrant is hauled off screaming by twenty Interpol agents for embezzling 500 million Swiss francs from the Union Bank of Switzerland.
