Democrats Plan to Cut Cheney out of Executive Funding Bill.
Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 02:24 PM by illinoisprogressive
Following Vice President Dick Cheney's assertion that his office is not a part of the executive branch of the US government, Democratic Caucus Chairman Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) plans to introduce an amendment to the the Financial Services and General Government Appropriations bill to cut funding for Cheney's office.

The amendment to the bill that sets the funding for the executive branch will be considered next week in the House of Representatives.

"The Vice President has a choice to make. If he believes his legal case, his office has no business being funded as part of the executive branch," said Emanuel in a statement released to RAW STORY. "However, if he demands executive branch funding he cannot ignore executive branch rules. At the very least, the Vice President should be consistent. This amendment will ensure that the Vice President's funding is consistent with his legal arguments."

At a press briefing yesterday, White House Deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino said that Cheney's assertion that he operates outside of the executive branch of government was "an interesting constitutional question that people can debate" and a "non-issue."

On Thursday, Emanuel suggested that if Cheney feels his office is not part of the executive branch "he should return the salary the American taxpayers have been paying him since January 2001, and move out of the home for which they are footing the bill."

Emanuel also released the following graphic satirizing the situation:

2. Worst possible move ever, if they formalize his assertion, they just
created a 4th branch of government and give the supremes a chance to assign its' functions. This Federalist Forum 101 to undermine the constitution.

3. A Fourth Branch With What Money?
Even is this gimmicky "ammendment" were to pass, which it obviously won't, how would your supposed "fourth branch" operate? Congress still holds the purse strings. Where's their funding going to come from?

4. It would likely come from Halliburton and the Carlyse Group, I bet.
Not that he needs protecting; he doesn't seem to mind shooting even his friends in the face!

They need to rename the fourth branch "Cheney Rogue Nation".

And welcome to DU!

And you're right...I completely left Haliburton - not to mention various other "special interests" - out of the equation.

My God...the Dick Branch could well become more powerful than the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial combined! :wow:

happy retiring to Dubai or some place where they would give him a hundred acres to call Dickistan.

7. Darth has over $400 Million.
He doesn't need a salary to keep his position as VP. Oh wait, he would still receive money a member of the Senate. Kicking him out of the VP Mansion is a nice notion though. Now would be a good time to Subpoena those Docs regarding the Secret Energy Meeting, since he cannot claim Exec Priv.

11. So what exactly has this SOB got to do to get IMPEACHED?
What is it going to take? Darth Cheney walking onto the floor of the Congress, grabbing a page and gutting them with a bowie knife from crotch to throat? IS THAT WHAT IS GOING TO *HAVE* TO HAPPEN to get these people to get the impeachment process (Dennis K's) going?

Oh frigging WHOOPIE! They are going to introduce a bill to take away his *allowance*!!! Yeah -- THAT'S gonna really work. NOT. :sarcasm:

26. My sentiments exactly.
Rahm Emanual spits in my face by using his position to joke about Cheney's CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES by pulling a stunt like this. This is NO laughing matter. The Dems should be lining up to sign up for his impeachment instead and we should have letters of impeachment for this douchebag on the table by Monday morning. Where is the anger here? What the hell are we paying them for?

Impeachment is one option. This is an avenue toward that option even if it's not apparent at this time.

41. He has access to information that aids his corporate friends in office
Do you really think he's going to give THAT up? And do you think there would not be some sort of remuneration for him for aiding his corporate friends?

I personally don't think Cheney will leave, even at the end of his term. They've been stripping away at rules that force both he and Bush to leave. He needs to be impeached - NOW.

I dont honestly think he'll resign or be impeached, but he is forced into a confrontation and I think Rahm E is doing a great job on this.

44. No, it forces the debate. Impeachment at this point would be a PR stunt.
I guess we have to choose our stunts. I'd rather not impeach before we have the votes because we may not be able to cross the bridge when/if we do have the votes.

25. Anyone read the book "The Thumpin."? About Emanuel and the 2006 election
The Thumpin': How Rahm Emanuel and the Democrats Learned to Be Ruthless and Ended the Republican Revolution http://www.amazon.com/Thumpin-Democrats-Ruthless-Republican-Revolution/dp/0385523289/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-1629078-8045634?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1182632680&sr=8-1

Sounds interesting. I'm been (secretely) hoping we'd find someone ruthless to work for us.

He admits it's a joke but hell, what was the "Pelosi can't visit terrorist countries" bill all about if not a joke?

How far do you think his $400 million would go toward maintaining the entire monstrous VP's office?

It's actually a brilliant move, despite its inevitable loss. It keeps the issue alive, and will lead to a confrontation.

or is this a one-time only deal, or maybe a get out of jail free card? Who knows? They twist and shape the law to fit their crimes.... Kind of like the Iraq war where they fixed the facts to fit the policy???
