HBO's "John From Cincinnati" being trashed by Right wing newpapers - Spirituality is dangerous
Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 04:12 PM by symbolman
“John From Cincinnati,” a drama that combines the zen of the surfing culture with doses of philosophy, quantum physics and dysfunctional family life. And a visit from what may be an extraterrestrial.'

******

I've watched both episodes of HBO's Soprano replacement "John From Cincinnati" and frankly I'm Blown away by it. It is THE kind of show that needed in this day and age, a concept for this Time, a work of Genius by the man who brought us NYPD Blue, Deadwood..

David Milch is a guru, spent most of his life on heroin, and psychedelics and is one hell of philosophizer. He makes no bones about his drug use and believes in an organic universe, that Community is an Organism, that Reality is shifting - and if you've studied things like Particle String theory and such, you'll see that he's on the Beam.

Some have theorized that there is actually only ONE subatomic particle, an electron, and that any change in a single Electron causes what we think are ALL of THEM to change, in the entire universe. Which means that reality is NOT what we "think" it is.

This new show is so far beyond what people are used to, what they've been TRAINED to watch that it's being trashed. If you've seen it, you know what I'm saying. If you haven't, then WATCH IT.

The right wingers are Carpet Bombing this show, Wall Street Journal compared it to being in the Snake Pit of an insane asylum, some little brain at the Boston Herald isn't satisfied to say it ain't his cup of tea, no, he's got to Trash it.

They're scared. It's ain't about Jesus, it ain't about 3.2 children and a mortgage, and you don't KNOW what's going to Happen in the show, which of course is Unacceptable. Like my bro said, "If there wasn't a Laugh Track, you wouldn't know it was a COMEDY.."

And I used to say, "TV makes me Psychic.." as in I always KNOW what's coming. With this Surf Noir, existential program you have NO IDEA what's coming, just like the REAL WORLD :)

This show SCARES the shit out of them. Some people might actually THINK.

My advice is to WATCH THIS, and keep an open mind, it WILL challenge you, as opposed to any of the Crap on the Tube now :)

4. You might be a little lost
If you can catch the first and second episodes - it's pretty out there.. I found a site last night that lays out the episode guide, I'll have to look for it and get you up to date on the show.

Here's another review that I enjoyed:

"Reviews are all over the map for HBO's new David Milch it's-not-"Deadwood" series "John from Cincinnati," though it seems those who hate it are hacked off that Milch has forced them to consider philosophies off their radar.

Make that, waaay off their radar. Herewith, the transcript of the January press conference with Milch and his cast members; much of this may just play, as it did with the TV critics scratching their heads after this session, as mind-numbing mental masturbation. Others may plow through this and be amazed: These precepts have been turned into a TV show? Which means "John from Cincinnati" will emerge as either the most profound program in the history of TV or the most idiotically obfuscating. You make the call, after the jump."

8. Not just Spirituality
but REALITY, Quantum Physics, etc..

Mind blowing, and folks seem to either GET IT, or NOT, and of course now that we are a BINARY Society you would expect no less. :)

I invite everyone to Google David Milch - I did, and I was so amazed by both him and his show that I wrote him immediately with my support (also sent him by Book, THE JESUS BOLT, which works along the same lines as JFC, in case he wanted the Alaskan Version of JFC..), and I'm NOT the FanBoy type..

Total inspiration..

BTW for those that don't get it, "John From Cincinnati" shortened to JFC harkens back to an old joke that includes "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST" - the show is FULL of little goodies like that, if you take the time to THINK about it :)

5. I dunno...
What i saw (admittedly only about 15 minutes) bored me. A mix of pseudo-metaphysics, something i'll call "surfer-cool" that was meant ot be some kind of "hipster" cool but didn't pull it off, and a sort of gritty-pseudo-realism.

Didn't do anything for me...and it damn sure didn't scare me. And i'll save you the trouble: i'm about as far from a RW'er as inhabits this place.

that's exactly what I thought, this is Twin Peaks for this generation..

They have to use Cool Surf to sell Quantum concepts, again, genius, head and shoulders above Lynch.

Besides HBO used up their Midget credits with Carnival, that over blown POS that I watched anyway.. bad TV is important to watch as well, so you know the good stuff when you see it :)

33. The midget's acting
drove me from the show.. he was REALLY Bad, and I'm a forgiving viewer, but I just couldn't take it.. most everyone else was basically professional.. I liked the concept, but in a way it was just another Billy Mumy wishing people into the cornfield, though as a period piece it was exquisite :)

27. 15 minutes isn't a fair shake
Of course it's going to be boring if you only see a little clip of it. It's a very minimalist show and I think what ISN'T being said and all the really subtle nuances are more important than the direct action of the show.

I see a lot of reviews that try to make a leap between certain events - like John showed up and somehow is causing a bunch of weird stuff to happen - that isn't what is going on at all and those reviewers are missing the point entirely.

Give it a chance and watch a few episodes. I'm waiting to see where it goes. I like the ideas they're exploring and want to see where they take it.

DOGMA running over Their Karma :)

It may be too DEEP for those that haven't given it a chance, the true Genius is that it slides right past those who can't grasp the depth, and Infuriates those who will NEVER get it.

of all people I would think that YOU would enjoy the ramifications of this adventure of the mind.. don't fall into the trap of comparing your grief over Deadwood with this sterling work, keep watching, from what I read it's going to get WAY out there..

For instance the Producer Milch has said that at one point John (who has been sent as an empty vessel by his Father), will be telling people about the horror of 911, only it AIN'T the 911 that everyone ELSE is thinking of..

If you have DVR watch it with the subtitles on, when the shooting scene is on, listen to what John says as they switch from character to character, Revelations going on.

There's more than the surface stuff in this baby.. read about Milch, a guy who will philosphize about Cardboard, and take in some of what he's saying.

It's my opinion that we're looking forward to a RESURGENCE of Spirituality in this country, maybe the world, with all the pain, with the way everyone has been Boxed in, rendered powerless, they'll be looking for SOMETHING...

I've been noticing a return to the 70's, where people were looser, more caring, FREE, and on top of that watch for RAYS around everything in the Media - having studied anthropology, and art history it's significant, just like those ICONS with the Halos around all the heads, that's NOT just about religion, it's about the SEARCH for Illumination, and it's BACK, for real. We will rebel against goose stepping for Jesus all over the world, and it's beginning now, esp with shows like this, slipping under the radar :)

That's why I spent five years on my book, it looks to that end, and it AIN'T gonna be Christianity, MORE, FURTHER, DEEPER :)

34. Yeah, there's been a pall cast over it
Seems that one of their HBO bigshots, the man who brought you the Sopranos and Sex in the City, etc got Popped for smacking a woman around (second time too, the bastard), and so he had to resign.. I think this may put the Deadwood movies into limbo, maybe for good..

I've never watched that much of it, tho I lived in Sturgis for a few years, and studied the history of Deadwood, where I'd head up to gamble.. even created a deck of playing cards with all the Aces through Jacks as famous people in Deadwood History, Potato Creek Jonny, Seth Bullock, Wild Bill, etc..

Watching Deadwood repeat now, not sure what season it is.. looks like the one where the season starts with a boot on a prostitutes neck, not a nice man.. :)

23. "I got my eye on YOU"
This is the best show ever!! Milch is outdoing himself again! Thanks for the thread, Symbolman! Someone started a thread on this in the entertainment section, but I was the only one saying give it a chance - most people didn't like Deadwood right away. Milch is different - that's why a lot of people can't stand him and that's why I adore him - I'm a Milch dirt-worshipper. I've read everything about the guy I can lay my hands on.

BTW - there's a great article in this month's "Outside" magazine (Butchie Yost is on the cover) about the show, the surfing metaphor and explains what Milch is exploring with the character of John Monad - about the monadism philosophy of Leibniz (Newton's rival discoverer of calculus)-

The Monads
Leibniz's best known contribution to metaphysics is his theory of monads, as exposited in Monadologie. Monads are to the metaphysical realm what atoms are to the physical/phenomenal. Monads are the ultimate elements of the universe. The monads are "substantial forms of being" with the following properties: they are eternal, indecomposable, individual, subject to their own laws, un-interacting, and each reflecting the entire universe in a pre-established harmony (a historically important example of panpsychism). Monads are centers of force; substance is force, while space, matter, and motion are merely phenomenal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gottfried_Leibniz

If I'm sure of one thing, it's that Milch is going to take us on one wild ride & lay our asses in the I-C-U!!!

31. What's funny is that I wrote a book that I'm working on publication of
so I looked up the Symbol for a Monad (since I'm symbolman, even won a hollywood award for one of my animations in 2000, beat out over 650 animators world wide http://www.symbolman.com), and it was basically a large circle with a dot in the middle..

I sent it to my wife in an email entitled "Omigod.. Look at THIS", in the subject told her.. "What would a Helicopter look like from above while running, and what would that dot in the middle be?"

Now to put this into perspective, my Book THE JESUS BOLT is ostensibly about my flying around Alaska in the 70's looking for Uranium by helicopter, and doing a LOT more. On my first ride a crazed Vietnam Vet pilot took me up (we spent 18 hour days under the midnight sun, working) and flew me UPSIDE DOWN, doing a Figure Eight, as we FELL from the sky..

When we landed, he told me that I need Never have FEAR again, and also about The Jesus Bolt, that bit of metal that holds all the Blades on the chopper, when that falls out, the next person you'll be talking to is Jesus, Himself :)

SOoo, that little dot in the middle of the symbol, is THE JESUS BOLT - there at the top of the chopper as seen abover, holding all the blades together.

It's the running metaphor in my book, what holds the Universe together, the ecosystems up there in Alaska, the Protaganist, Himself?

Actually, I have come to worship Milch so much and there were so many Serendipitous things going on between what he's been through, and my book and the show, that I sent him a copy of it last week.. I'm hoping he'll have some interest in it, seems like he and I have been writing in the same vein, Spiritually, Metaphorically, New Reality, etc for FIVE YEARS Now, that I was compelled to do it..

Like you I worship the dirt that guy walks on :)

I think after the horrors we've all been through that a New Age is dawning, and I've never been one for any New Age crap. I'm a total Realist.

But I've always been good at seeing "Trends" in our culture, and SOMETHING is going down, people are Waking UP. And it's about time :)

37. It's the Pythagorean monad

from which everything emanates. It's also the symbol for other things - Ra, the Eqyptian sun god; the bullseye; the

eye of god; the wheel; the Keter in Kaballah (the IAM); the third eye; the hydrogen atom among many others. And now we

can add to that - the Jesus Bolt. The story sounds right on target with Milch. He is also a symbolman like you - even

the F on Butchie's motel door means something. "Somethings I know and somethings I don't."

When you begin seeing/feeling/sensing synchronicities, doors and windows are opening and you begin seeing things

differently. It's quite mind-blowing at times and this is where the surfing is really important - balance is the key.

"What is it you want, Butchie?"

There is something happening and there are many of us feeling it - most just can't put it into words or feel crazy

talking about it, but it's real. It's more real than what we're used to thinking is real. I'm loving every minute

of it and Milch was one of those who helped me through the dark passageway with Deadwood and, for that, I will always

be grateful to him. Perhaps your book will help others, as well! You should think about self-publishing it.

38. Why thank you
a wonderful post, great to see folks that are seeing the trend, I believe there's a lot of Happiness around the corner, a lot of self fullfilment for many, the culture at large.. could be the baby boomers, the same ones that gave us ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE, etc, are going to wake up from their financial quests and find themselves with the urge to actually engage each other and the planet..

It's one of the quotes in my book from the crazy "Shaman of the Tundra" Vietnam Veteran, who introduces the Protaganist to meditation in the mountains of the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.. he tells him, "If we don't start Loving each other, we're all going to DIE.." :)

70's mentality are back, those people like my generation, who actually put into practice the lifestyle the Hippies abandoned when they headed for Wall Street, "Where have all the flowers gone? Gone to Wall Street, Every One" is what I used to say to them :)

Many thanks, hope Milch at least looks at my material.. I sent him a photo of our crew in the bush, standing in front of a huge Otter aircraft, our moving van in the sky for our mobile camp, and wrote the definition of The Jesus Bolt - in the sky..

You should post more often, we need more reflection on the DU, and less snippy driveby posts.

What does the F mean anyway? :)
