6. Is this the married boyfriend?
Because the crawl on one of the cable news stations yesterday at lunch said he wasn't a suspect. So, were they trying to make him think he wasn't, were the police stupid, is this a different boyfriend, or was the news wrong?

was that he was cooperating and they said that if they did name him he would have lawyered up. Also he let them search his home but yesterday they came back with a warrant to do a more intense search of his property.

19. Sounds similar to the case we had here a few months ago
Where the husband killed his wife -- Tara Grant killed by Steven Grant. It was a really grisly murder. He strangled her and took her to the shop he worked at and cut her into pieces.

For the longest time he wasn't a suspect -- until he was.

39. Considering him a suspect and officially calling him a suspect are two completely different things.
I was a reporter on the Soldier of Fortune case back in the late 80s in Texas. The sheriff told us off the record from the very first day that the husband was a suspect, but it wasn't official for quite awhile after that.

36. They already interviewed someone who said that a 2-year-old might testify...
I think the child told the neighbor that he remembers "mommy being rolled up in a rug."

The professional (psychiatrist? psychologist?) said that much would hinge on "how close to age 3 this child is." In other words, a 24-month-old could be too young but at 36-months (almost three), he could be counted on more.

So, so, so sad for that handsome little guy. I hope somebody comes forward from his family to raise him. The maternal grandmother (mother of the dead woman) was just in total emotional shambles on the interview I saw with her.

44. Well, I don't see them around here
Well, I haven't. It's not like I'm going out of my way to look or anything, it's just that I don't see it. Is this just about shocking people? My paternal aunt was a basket case and tried to shock the family by marrying a black man. The poor guy was a doctor, a decent guy, and totally unprepared for good old-fashioned german-american catholic insanity. My grandmother was Catholicism's answer to the Puritans and she did a real mindjob on both my dad and aunt. He divorced her after a few years and I hope went on to find happiness with someone sane.

And as I stated previously, this is not a scientific survey, just a generalization. I'm asking for general explanations, not blanket statements that profess to explain every case.

46. most people think white/black when they hear interracial
Of course, any pairing of different socio-economic-religious backgrounds can be problematic. My next-door neighbors growing up both looked "average american white" but he was catholic and she was jewish so there was always a bucking of heads between the extended families. One of my friends had a korean mother and a deceased american dad, no extended family so I'm not sure what problems there were for mom getting acclimated to our culture here. They met when the dad was stationed in Korea. I know another guy who married a korean woman when he was over there and she later divorced him. The differences were more than just about race and culture, she was from a very rich family and he was very middle-class; she couldn't get used to slumming it like a normal person. I think they would have had precisely the same problems if he was middle-class korean.

Still, in the US there seems to be a bigger focus on black/white being "interracial" than anything else. From a sampling of the more conservative people I know, one of their children marrying someone hispanic or oriental would raise less of an eyebrow than someone who is black, regardless of the background that black person comes from.

Generally speaking, discriminating people feel that there are differences and there's a damn good reason for them. This goes for race, religion, creed, favorite NASCAR driver, etc. Accommodating people can sometimes pretend that there are no differences and everyone should get along. I think the realistic view is to say there are differences but they are problems to work through rather than walls that should be fortified.

I do think it's amusing (in a cynical, George Carlin sense) when people try to explain in rational language the irrational things they fervently believe. It's like "the crazy things you believed as a kid" except these people are adults and people get killed over it.

65. Years ago when we lived in eastern Ohio my wife (who is Filipino),
I'm white, had a coworker make a comment to her, when they saw a interracial (black/white) couple walk by, that was very derogatory about such relationships.

My wife was offended, of course, by the racist attitude, but also by the fact that didn't occur to the coworker that my wife and I are an interracial couple, as well. "Interracial relationships" to many Americans means black/white.

She must be jinxed, in some way, because now she has a coworker who is a racist, not towards her (Asians don't seem to bother some racists), but of course towards Blacks. This coworker, who is a quiet and obnoxious racist rather than a loud and obnoxious one, proclaimed right from the start that it was the Black boyfriend that was the murderer. (The facts in the case would lead many, unbiased people to the same conclusion, but the facts had nothing to do with this person's opinion.)

My wife is not looking forward to hearing the "I told you so"'s on Monday.

Edited on Sat Jun-23-07 06:11 PM by book_worm
but I think you still probably see more black men with white women. Why? I don't know. The main thing about the case isn't that he is black and she is white it's that a human being was killed and a child now has no mother. It's sad, man.

Why do some women go for "bad guys" I've heard it's because they think they can change them and also because they are "take charge" types and that some women like that. That the "nice guy" is maybe too much of a wimp. But since I'm not a woman I can't say for sure and I'm just writing things I've heard and/or read.

The sad thing is that I can imagine some of the racist types will say that she brought it on herself by having a black boyfriend and a black boyfriend who was married.

Yeah, that'll be the gut reaction of some. Seeing him with the nice shirt and the hat, looking like someone on the golf course, my guy reaction is she probably went for someone who seemed like he had it together but was a jerk. She ignored the warning signs and look where it got her. Of course, I know nothing of the story because I was on vacation for a week and away from the nooz. Got a cousin who is now looking at a divorce from a wife from hell. The bitch abuses the kids, steals from everyone, commits credit card fraud in his name, breaks things in the trailer when she doesn't get her drug money, is now on crack, etc. Who do I blame? His dumb ass for not divorcing her years ago. Any one of the stunts she pulled would have seen me sore-pressed to keep from smacking her. (Not that that would matter, she fakes injuries on herself for the cops.) Why he's stayed with her for so long I just don't know. I guess it's better to be a man in this sort of situation because the man just get financially fucked over while the women tend to get killed.

Ugh! So frustrating. Puts me in mind of a Bill Hicks song.

Aw, man Oh, Hitler had Ava Braun,
Manson had Squeaky Frawn,
Ted Bundy got lots of dates,
I wonder what I'm doing wrong.
I don't pretend to understand women's little quirks
Just one thing I know for sure - chicks dig jerks, yeah.
Well, if I meet one more single mom
Whose true love is up and gone
Tells me on her trailer porch
'Bout that man
Still carries a torch,
Sure, he came home drunk each night
Beat the kids and her in a fight,
But, man, she loves him so,
It's so hard to let him go, aw.
Well, I don't pretend to understand women's little quirks,
Just one thing I know for sure - chicks dig jerks.
Well, I'm sure there's some out there who can relate,
Particularly young men without a date
See some jerk, some fine, fine babe,
Go driving away, aw.
Well, is that a new bruise you got on you?
What does it say, that he loves you?
Sure he beats you, but afterwards he cries, "Oh, baby, I could die."
Honey, I don't think that's nothing to be proud of,
I think it's called alcoholism
I don't think you should move away,
Stay with him till you're in your grave, yeah.
"You're so sweet."
"Can't we just be friends?"
"I think of you as a brother."
Aw, man. You're hurting me.
What do I have to offer you, baby?
Poetry and true love.
That's not enough, I know for sure,
You need someone to throw you through the door.
Well, I don't pretend to understand women's little quirks.
Just one thing I know for sure-chicks dig jerks!
Chicks dig jerks, it's so true.
Tell you, man, be mean to 'em man, they'll never leave you, then,
'Cause chicks dig jerks.
Just ignore 'em.
Act like they're not there.
Man, you're gonna be pulling chicks out of your hair.
They love that.
Act like you don't care,
Aw, look at them everywhere, they come running.
Tired of being a good guy Such a lonely life.
I'm gonna be a jerk Yeah, that's right, I'm gonna step on lots of toes.
Whoo, girls gonna go crazy for that kind of guy.
Baby, I'm gonna act like I don't know you.
Not gonna return one of your calls.
Yeah, I'm a jerk And it's working out.

My age (50ish) said she posted on a couple of local dating websites. She indicated she was NOT interested in younger men. But she said she keeps getting pestered by black men much younger than herself obviously wanting a "sugar-momma". She's white. So it works both ways. As a man, I have to unfortunately admit without a doubt there are many lazy male bastards of all colors out there today who want a free ride.

51. Economic explanation
(generalities here)

OK, people select mates to maximize their status. Status can be gained many ways.

Black guys dating white women in our society can be considered gaining status. Not so for white guys.

Black women get a lot of shit from their friends and family for dating outside their race.

Plus, dude, didn't you ever see The Jeffersons?

60. ok, that makes sense
Never watched the Jeffersons. I know that the theme song is about pie in the sky and that's about it.

But the way you explained it, that makes a whole lot of sense. And the negative social pressure the black men might receive, that is counteracted by the perceived bonus of having a white chick. Other black men would either congratulate or secretly envy him. If the black women don't like it, what does it matter? He's upgraded to white women. He'd only have to worry about their opinions if he's no longer able to succeed with white women.

What a piece of work is man, a real piece of work. *sarcasm*
