Argument Against Global Warming
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=20070315&articleId=5086">Global Research

The above two links were posted in a thread on another board about the Rolling Stone article on Global Warming.

Needless to say, they HAVE an argument. But this isn't the first time a Global Warming thread blew up. A large portion of the people on that board are Libertarian though, and Libertarians don't believe in Global Warming.

1. They have thoroughly debunked arguments
although, needless to say- understanding basic science (much less complicated climate science) -or understanding how to analyze claims honestly and think critically is NOT a characteristic of most libertarians.

11. Probably pointless
I know a few of these guys and it's like talking to Bush's remaining supporters, they don't care about evidence, information or facts. The idea that global warming doesn't exist/is not a problem/is unavoidable is simply an article of faith to them.

3. The corporate control of the Environment Movement....
Is absolutely insignificant compared to the corporate control of the lobbies who want to spread the notion that Global Warming doesn't exist so they have free reign to pollute as much as they want. To consider the Climate Change movement as being driven by corporation is kind of ridiculous. The great bulk of corporations stand to gain by denying Global Warming's existance.

5. Noted sci-fi author Larry Niven used to be pro-global-cooling
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 02:28 PM by krispos42
Scientists had noted that the neutrino output of the sun did not match calculated energy output. It was feared tha the fusion reaction in the sun had a strength cycle of a few thousand years, and it was currently ebbing. If true, that would mean that the Sun's output was on the low end of the output curve, and global cooling was on it.

He wrote a sci-fi book about it called "Fallen Angels".

He hypothized that the Earth had started cooling hundreds of years ago, maybe a couple of thousand, but human activity had poured enough carbon dioxide in the air to offset the dimished solar output.

Until the Greens came. Radical environmentalists that combined the worst of the radical left and the radical right. Oppressive government, ultrastrict environmental regulations, science and technology villified. The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is renamed the Museum of Science and Appropriate Technology, for example, and is virtually abandoned.

Ironically, the opressive government in the story sounds a lot like post-Patriot-Act America. Anyway...

Glaciers are encroaching on the northern states, Canadian cities are in a state of permenant snowpack, etc., etc., etc.

Fortunately, our orbiting space stations are able to lend some assistance and provide hope for the oppressed masses below and maintain science (with the help of die-hard sci-fi fans) while the world slowly disintigrates. One particularly amusing thing is 'cheese smugglers', Wisconsinites that risk life and limb to bring cheddar through the snow and glaciers to cities further south and getting huge payoffs when sucessful. :-)

6. they're counting on you to not actually research their arguments
example:
The assertion is made, "Scientists think Pluto is warming"
when you actually read the link you find this:

http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/pluto_warming_021009.html

Pluto's atmospheric pressure has tripled over the past 14 years, indicating a stark temperature rise, the researchers said. The change is likely a seasonal event, much as seasons on Earth change as the hemispheres alter their inclination to the Sun during the planet's annual orbit.

They suspect the average surface temperature increased about 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit, or slightly less than 2 degrees Celsius.

Pluto remains a mysterious world whose secrets are no so easily explained, however. The warming could be fueled by some sort of eruptive activity on the small planet, one astronomer speculated.

The increasing temperatures are more likely explained by two simple facts: Pluto's highly elliptical orbit significantly changes the planet's distance from the Sun during its long "year," which lasts 248 Earth years; and unlike most of the planets, Pluto's axis is nearly in line with the orbital plane, tipped 122 degrees. Earth's axis is tilted 23.5 degrees.

Though Pluto was closest to the Sun in 1989, a warming trend 13 years later does not surprise David Tholen, a University of Hawaii astronomer involved in the discovery.

"It takes time for materials to warm up and cool off, which is why the hottest part of the day on Earth is usually around 2 or 3 p.m. rather than local noon," Tholen said. "This warming trend on Pluto could easily last for another 13 years."

----------

this is typical of the denialists.
They make a bogus assertion, and just keep repeating it
to see if it sticks.

8. There is no argument that the earth's weather is changing.
The argument is what is being done to lessen the effects of it?

Or should we just roll over and play dead and not try to do something to live with the change?

Wouldn't it be nice to see our government sponsor a seminar of the best brains in the world to address the problems and possible solutions to the world's weather change?

14. Many freeps still deny the FACT that the earth is heating up
They think that because they go outside during the winter and it's cold, global warming must be a myth.

It would be great to see the gov't really start getting involved. Here in Canada, our Prime Minister called the Kyoto Accord a "socialist plot", and then got rid of Kyoto in Canada (which had been brought in by the previous Liberal government). So hey, at least you Americans aren't the only ones with a sciencephobic administration.

9. Best I've seen to date:
"But just because something can be plotted on an X and Y axis does not make it the whole truth."

American anti-intellectualism ecstatically running rampant.
