Richardson's Amazing Speech On Iraq at the TBA Conference
Edited on Mon Jun-25-07 04:25 PM by ludwigb
He absolutely nails the Iraq issue--the most important issue of all. After watching this speech, I wonder why the other candidates don't adopt the same position (bring ALL troops home within 6 months). I can see leaving some troops in Kurdish areas....but otherwise, I'm with Richardson.

The last 10 mintues of this speech (on Iraq) are a MUST WATCH.

The text of the conclusion...

I will tell you this -- my world view is different from my colleagues. In my career, I've been able to get results, not with harsh words, but hard work. You talk to your adversaries. You listen. You get to know them well if you want them to hear what you're saying. And with understanding comes resolve. And with clarity comes cooperation.

It's how I've approached foreign affairs. It's how I've approached governing. And it's how I'll serve as president of this great country.

More than anything else, we have a moral obligation to those American soldiers and citizens who've laid down their lives overseas.

Some say we cannot let their sacrifice be in vain. But you will never convince me that those slain patriots would have wanted a single additional life to be lost ... just to validate their own sacrifice.

Instead, the moral obligation is to honor their service by bringing their mission to a close. By ending the bloodshed ... and finally letting the Iraqi people and the American people to set a new course.

Those would be the principles of my presidency. And those would be the ideals I'd seek.

4. If you had asked me just 2 short years ago
I would have flayed him to shreds on this board. His first term as governor was marred by a series of boneheaded decisions that could only have been made by someone firmly in thrall to the DLC, which he was.

However, his last two years in this state have been stellar. If he is a changed man and keeps following up on this change, he would be a formidable president.

I'd like the conceit that we the people of NM have slapped some sense into him. Somebody has.

6. The Flourishes At the End
Are what really got me.

Ultimately ya gotta confess--Richardson is standing for what anti-war activists want.....

Sure Edwards and Obama have their strong points on the war. But if people got behind Richardson because of this issue, perhaps it would make a real difference and compel these guys to come closer to Richardson's stand.
