Actual conversation I participated in today:
Churchy lady at work (CLAW): You will never believe what I saw on the Discovery Channel the other day.

Other lady at work (OLAW): What?!

(CLAW): There was this "documentary" about how Adam had a different wife before Eve. Oh my God, what was her name...

FLDem5: Lilith

Looking at me with surprise, (CLAW): Yeah, Lilith, and the guy said they were both made from dirt! And then after that Eve was made from his rib. (Rolls her eyes)

FLDem5: Yes, it is a version of Creation from Genesis. She...

Irritated, (CLAW): Well, I turned it off and told my son not to tell anyone he had heard anything that silly.

Follow the logic with me: That a man and a woman were both created from the same thing - ABSURD

That a man was made from said thing, and then a woman was made from part of a man - UNIVERSAL TRUTH not to be questioned by science or laws of nature.

::: sigh :::

I need a drink.

Oh, to have been there! Did you tell her how Lilith hated sex with Adam and ate little babies at night.

14. Lilith isn't actually mentioned in the Bible.
There's no record of her in Genesis at all. The way that story reads is that God saw Adam lonely in the Garden and created a partner for him, out of his rib, which was Eve.

No link was made between Adam and Lilith until much later in Jewish folk traditions

17. the problem with that is - if you read Genesis 1:
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth." 27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it;

...and then LATER in Genesis 2:

Then the Lord God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him." 19So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for the man there was not found a helper fit for him. 21So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; 22and the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man. 23Then the man said, "This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

So, in an attempt to "explain inconsistencies" Lilith tradition was born:

Employing both a philological method and often an ingenious imagination, midrashic writings, which reached their height in the 2nd century CE, influenced later Christian interpretations of the Bible. Inconsistencies in the story of Genesis, especially the two separate accounts of creation, received particular attention. Later, beginning in the 13th century CE, such questions were also taken up in Jewish mystical literature known as the Kabbalah.

According to midrashic literature, Adam's first wife was not Eve but a woman named Lilith, who was created in the first Genesis account. Only when Lilith rebelled and abandoned Adam did God create Eve, in the second account, as a replacement. In an important 13th century Kabbalah text, the Sefer ha-Zohar ("The Book of Splendour") written by the Spaniard Moses de Leon (c. 1240-1305), it is explained that:

At the same time Jehovah created Adam, he created a woman, Lilith, who like Adam was taken from the earth. She was given to Adam as his wife. But there was a dispute between them about a matter that when it came before the judges had to be discussed behind closed doors. She spoke the unspeakable name of Jehovah and vanished.

I am no expert, and I don't believe in biblical legends or tradions, but as a reader - there is SOME TYPE of woman created in Genesis 1 - and Eve doesn't appear until 2. You can argue semantics and translations (do biblical scholars ever do anything else?!) but Lilith is inferred by the bible and named in tradition.

10. Dogma tends to be blind from reason. That's the problem with many people and church leaders.
It's why I generally eschew organized religion. I became a Deist. I don't believe in Scripture, holy prophets, angels, or anybody claiming to have been visited by angels or spoken to God or has been given the "secret truth" by angels, prophets, or God(s) without evidence. In any other case, it's simply hearsay.
