Arizona schools struggling to meet new law (mandatory US flags in classrooms)
http://news.webindia123.com/news/Articles/World/20070626/697176.html

Schools across Arizona are struggling to meet a new law that requires a U.S. flag and several federal documents to be displayed in each classroom.

The new state legislation not only requires each class to post an American-made U.S. flag, but mandates that each classroom post a copy of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the Arizona Republic said.

While schools in cities like Peoria, Ariz., have received donations to pay for the new classroom additions, many Arizona school districts must pay for the mandated items from their own budgets, the newspaper said.

<snip>

All students should be exposed to and learn about the flag, the Constitution (and) the Bill of Rights as part of their studies. But just because it's hanging on the wall doesn't mean the students are really going to learn much about these subjects, parent Sharon Shindel told the Republic.

1. I have no problem with this...
The flag SHOULD be displayed in all schools. Every classroom, I'm sure that's not a big issue... And the Constitution should be available to everyone, all the time.

6. The story says you're wrong. It -IS- a big issue.
When a State doesn't have the $$$
for decent BOOKS or decent TEACHERS,
saddling it with extra expenses for
political window dressing is a big,
insane deal, IMHO.

2. Mandatory flags?
I don't have a problem with the flag being there, but mandatory?
The Constitution and Bill of Rights as part of the studies, I definitely agree with. And perhaps a lesson on how they are being shredded right now.

3. I imagine part of their "struggle" will be to
find ones made on American soil. They'd probably have better luck having the kids **draw** huge flags themselves to hang on the walls!

14. I doubt they're going to cover the "shredding" part in modern civics classes these days.
Public education has been reduced to little more than job training for corporate interests. Maybe some day it will become something greater with the goal of turning out thoughtful, critically thinking citizens instead of obedient workers fearful of authority.

4. What the hell kinda classroom doesn't have a flag in it already?
I think this speaks pretty badly about the state of school funding in Arizona. I have never in my career as a teacher seen a classroom without a flag in it.

7. Interesting, I teach in AZ
and have not heard of this issue. Thank you for brining it to my attention. I do agree that having the students making a flag will ensure the classroom flag is made in the US of A.

12. I teach in an elementary school
yet while I was as ASU (back in the 80's) I never saw a flag in any classroom. I did not realize the rule exteneded to our universities.

11. The Flag in classrooms is another constant reminder to

the young fluid brains of children that they must bow to authority. Those in Government are authority, to resist them is to resist all those who died for the flag and since those who died, did so for god and country to resist the flag is to resist god.

Authority must be maintained, children must be indoctrinated, the cycle must never be broken.

Children in school are taught to be consumers who will be the cogs of industry and war (more often war these days than industry).

13. The financial burden of this
pales in comparison to what a federal judge has mandated that the state pay for ESL classes.
